A few minutes later, Zachary arrived in a rush.
“Seren.”
His gaze was solely focused on Serenity; he didn’t even notice Remy sitting nearby, chatting with Elisa.
Zachary quickly approached Serenity and examined the IV drip. He crouched down and gently held her injured finger, his heart aching as he asked, “Does it hurt?”
“Why don’t you try it for yourself?”
Zachary felt a wave of guilt wash over him. “I’m sorry, Seren. I was wrong again.”
Serenity pursed her lips and replied, “It’s not your fault. I hurt myself accidentally.”
Zachary looked up at her. Their eyes met for a brief moment before she looked away.
His heart tightened.
He stood up and, after a pause, said, “The infusion is finished. I’ll take you home.”
“Rest well and avoid cold water for the next few days to prevent the wound from getting infected.”
“You’re busy with work, so you don’t need to take me. Elisa will drive me home.”
It was Saturday, but his entire company was working overtime, clearly overwhelmed with tasks.
Zachary continued to stare at her.
Elisa and Remy, who had been watching from the sidelines, exchanged glances.
Remy cleared his throat.
Only then did Zachary notice him.
“Why are you here, Mr. Johnson?”
Remy smiled wryly. “I’m a fully grown man who has been sitting here the whole time. You’ve been here for several minutes without noticing me. It seems I have the ability to turn invisible.”
“What happened, Mr. Johnson?” Zachary didn’t take offense at Remy’s sarcasm; he had only seen Serenity when he arrived and was surprised to find Remy there.
“I don’t know why, but I suddenly came down with a stomach bug. I came to the hospital because I couldn’t…”

“Seren’s infusion is finished. Please call the nurse to help remove the needle,” Elisa instructed Zachary.
Although he disliked Elisa’s commanding tone, he endured it and went to call the nurse. After the nurse removed the needle, Zachary instinctively wanted to help Serenity apply pressure to the puncture wound, but Elisa was quicker and pressed it first. In a warm voice, she said, “Seren, you need to keep pressure on it for a few minutes so it doesn’t bleed.”
Zachary felt unable to overshadow Elisa’s presence and couldn’t bring himself to argue with her. He asked with concern, “Has Seren received her medication yet?”
“Not yet. Please go to the pharmacy to get it for her. There’s no oral medication; it’s all topical for dressing the wounds,” Elisa replied.
Zachary pursed his lips and turned to head to the pharmacy to pick up his wife’s medicine. As soon as he left, Elisa assisted Serenity in walking out.
“Seren,” Zachary called as he quickly approached. “Let me take you home, okay?” He then turned to Elisa, saying, “Thank you for taking care of her, Ms. Stone.”
Serenity hadn’t wanted to come to the hospital; it was Elisa who had insisted. Zachary was grateful to Elisa for that.
Although Serenity and Zachary’s relationship had warmed slightly, it fell back to square one because of Elisa. Zachary felt particularly displeased about this and even felt a pang of jealousy towards her, but he couldn’t deny that Elisa genuinely cared for Serenity.
He also realized that he could no longer treat Elisa as coldly as he had before.
Serenity was Zachary’s cousin, and she genuinely cared for her. However, Zachary couldn’t shake the feeling that Serenity seemed to care for everyone but him, leaving his heart feeling bitter once more.
