Luke was thoroughly satisfied with Scarlett’s current state–even felt a twisted sense of pleasure from it.

After watching her for another moment, he suddenly leaned in. His broad frame blocked the overhead light as he gripped her chin, his voice dripping with contempt. “Look at you now. Still think you can mess with me?”

Scarlett forced her eyes open. Her eyelids were swollen and heavy, but she saw the disdain in his gaze clearly. She said nothing.

Her silence seemed to irritate him further. He shoved her chin aside roughly. “Remember this well, Scarlett. Today was just a warning. You’d better pray nothing happens to my sister. If it does… what happened here will only be the beginning.”

Scarlett’s head was flung to the side. Tears escaped, soaking into the pillowcase.

With that, Luke left, Naomi trailing behind him.

Suddenly, the room was quiet again–so quiet Scarlett could hear her own ragged pulse.

She reached weakly for the phone on the bedside table, intending to call for help.

But as her fingers brushed it, the device tumbled to the floor.

Rolling slowly onto her side, she saw the screen had shattered into a spiderweb of cracks, colored lights flickering beneath the glass.

She no longer had the strength to retrieve it. All she could do was lie there, each breath a struggle.

Tears continued to fall, dampening the pillow.

No matter how hard she tried to hold back, quiet sobs eventually broke through.

She didn’t know how much time passed before her crying faded into exhausted stillness.

Then, darkness took over.

Somewhere in the haze, she felt hands moving over her body.

Scarlett thought it was a dream–until she forced her eyes open and saw a figure standing beside the bed.

She tried to focus, but his face remained blurred.

She attempted to speak, to tell him to stop, but her voice was a raw, broken whisper.

The man’s hand slid slowly up from her abdomen, coming to rest on her chest.

A low, mocking laugh followed. “What a shame,” he said, false sympathy in his tone. “Such a pretty thing… all beaten

like this.”

A cold dread washed through her.

She recognized the voice now–Caleb.

She felt him working at the buttons of her hospital gown. With immense effort, she managed,

“Get… out.”

–

Her vision cleared just enough to make out his face–the wicked smile, the triumphant glint in his eyes.

She knew what was coming..

In the next moment, Caleb undid the last button.

Her gown fell open.

Seeing the bruises that covered her body didn’t unsettle him–if anything, it seemed to excite him.

The bright stain of blood against the sheets acted like a catalyst, spurring him on.

He couldn’t hold back any longer. Kneeling on the bed, he pushed her legs apart, wedging one knee between them to keep her from closing them again.

His hands moved busily, tugging at her clothes.

Scarlett struggled, kicking weakly. “Caleb–stop! Get off me!”

Her resistance only seemed to fuel him.

Just as he reached to unfasten his own pants, the door swung open.

A young nurse stood in the doorway. She stared at Caleb, her voice stern. “The patient has just had surgery and needs rest. You’ll have to leave.”

Interrupted, Caleb calmly refastened his trousers.

As he climbed off the bed, he shot the nurse a sinister look. “You’d better watch your step. Wouldn’t want to lose your job over nothing.”

With two low, arrogant laughs, he walked out.

The nurse looked shaken by his threat, but she held her ground.

After a moment, Scarlett whispered, “Help me… make a call.”

The nurse looked at her battered form, understanding dawning. “Who should I call?” she asked, pulling out her phone.

Several faces flashed through Scarlett’s mind.

Damian? Nolan? Nathan? Violet?

But she couldn’t bring herself to reach out to any of them.

After a long pause, she said quietly, “Call the police.”

The nurse hesitated, then began to dial.

But before she could finish, the door opened again.

Naomi stood at the threshold, eyes fixed on the nurse. “Think carefully,” she said coolly. “Are you really willing to go against the entire Stewart family… for someone like her?”
