Luke was unusually calm. He settled into the chair beside the hospital bed and looked at Scarlett, who was covered in fresh bruises. “My sister had a high–risk exposure,” he stated flatly.
That evening, Lucy had been assisting her attending physician in surgery when she accidentally nicked through her glove–and into her own skin.
The patient on the table happened to be HIV–positive.
The operating room had erupted into chaos.
When Scarlett heard this, a flicker of concern still passed through her eyes. “Did she start post- exposure prophylaxis?” she asked.

Luke didn’t answer. Instead, he leaned closer. “You must be feeling pretty satisfied, aren’t you?”
Scarlett was taken aback. “What?”
Seeing her shocked expression, Luke sneered. “Why so surprised? Wasn’t it you who encouraged her to pursue medicine?”
Scarlett stayed silent.
It was true–she had urged Lucy to follow her own dreams.
Her silence only fueled Luke’s anger. “My sister could’ve married well and lived an easy life. But because of you, she insisted on this path. And look where it got her.”
He paused, letting the words hang.
After a few seconds, he added coldly, “Scarlett, if anything happens to my sister, do think my family will let you walk away from this?”

Scarlett met his gaze with a bitter smile. “Even without this, your family was never going to let me off the hook, was it?”
Luke stared at her, saying nothing.
The prolonged silence began to unnerve her. Warily, she asked, “What do you plan to do?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Luke stood up. His face was stony. “I don’t hit women,” he said.
Before Scarlett could process what he meant, he called toward the door, “Come in.”

The ward door opened, and a young woman walked in.
It took Scarlett a moment to recognize her–Naomi.

Naomi approached the bed, a cold smile on her lips. “Ms. Theron, long time no see. I hope you haven’t forgotten me?”
How could Scarlett forget? At that charity event, Damian had utterly humiliated Naomi.
Before Scarlett could respond, Luke ordered, “Do it.”
On cue, Naomi cracked her knuckles and–much like Amanda had earlier–began hitting Scarlett without restraint.
Weak and drained, Scarlett was now utterly vulnerable, like a fish on a cutting board.
Ever since Damian had humiliated her that day, Naomi had held a grudge. She’d sworn to get
even.
Now, she held nothing back.
Watching Scarlett weakened and unable to fight back, Naomi felt a surge of vindication.
“You looked so proud when Damian shielded you that day,” Naomi spat, yanking Scarlett’s hair to force her head up. “Call him now. Let’s see if he comes to rescue you.”
She sneered. “What kind of man do you think Damian is? Do you really believe he cares about you? Once he’s bored, he won’t even remember your name.”
With that, she slapped Scarlett hard across the face.
When her hand grew tired, she pinched Scarlett’s cheeks roughly. “Such a hard face–it’s hurting my hand.”
After shaking out her fingers, she resumed slapping. “Even if I killed you right here in this hospital room today, I doubt Damian would bother showing up.”
Throughout it all, Luke stood by, watching coldly without a hint of mercy.
Seeing how late it had gotten, Luke finally spoke up, “Enough. We’re leaving.”
Naomi stopped but pouted in protest. “Luke, I’m not done yet.”
She sidled up to him, clinging to his arm.
Luke glanced at her, his voice icy. “What? Do you actually want to kill her?”

Naomi shook his arm, her tone sickly sweet. “Could I?”
Seeing she was half–serious, Luke scoffed. “And if you did, would you take the blame?”
Naomi pouted and fell silent.

Luke turned his attention back to Scarlett. She lay flat on the bed, her face a mess of bruises and cuts, blood trickling from her nose. Beneath the torn hospital gown, fresh blood stained the inside of her thigh.
Naomi had shown no mercy; the gown was ripped nearly to shreds, barely covering her..
Now Scarlett lay helpless and broken, every shallow breath sending sharp pain through her body.
Seeing her in such a battered, half–conscious state, some of the pent–up anger in Luke’s heart finally began to subside.
