Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash ` 313
Roderick stopped Madeleine and led her to a quiet spot.
“I had Gerry pull the mall’s security footage. He found
something.”
Madeleine’s eyelid twitched.
Roderick tapped his phone, and a security video from the mall
started playing on the screen.
In the video, Mrs. Miller was standing alone in front of an accessory shop, her gentle gaze following Owen, who was off getting hot water, a faint smile on her lips.
She occasionally looked down, gently stroking her pregnant
belly, radiating a sense of happy peacefulness.
Then, her gaze seemed to be drawn to something diagonally in
front of her.
The smile on her face faltered slightly, her brow furrowed, as if
she saw someone or something confusing or unexpected.
She hesitated for a few seconds, then walked in that direction,

her figure temporarily disappearing off the edge of the screen.
About a minute or two later, Mrs. Miller reappeared in the
frame.
But now, something was clearly wrong with her.
Her face was deathly pale, completely drained of color, even
worse than she looked now in the hospital bed.
Her eyes were unfocused, filled with extreme shock, disbelief,
and even… a hint of fear.
Her steps were unsteady, one hand clutching her lower
abdomen tightly, the other unconsciously gripping the hem of
her clothes.
She looked as if she’d suffered a huge shock, completely
devastated.
She didn’t even look in Owen’s direction again, just stumbled as
she tried to get back to where she was standing before.
But after just two steps, her body lurched, her breathing
became rapid, and she clutched her chest with her other hand,
her face contorted in extreme pain.

Right after that, her legs gave out, and she collapsed forward
without any warning…
“Oh my God…”
Madeleine slapped a hand over her mouth, gasping, her heart
feeling like it had been squeezed tight.
It wasn’t because of the footage of Mrs. Miller collapsing, but
her extremely abnormal, devastated state right before it
happened!
“What did she see?”
Madeleine’s voice trembled as she urgently grabbed Roderick’s
arm. “What happened during that time she walked away?
Where’s the footage from that direction?”
Roderick’s expression was terrifyingly dark, a cold storm.
brewing in his eyes.
He quickly switched to another video file.
“This is the security footage from that angle.”
His voice was laced with a chill. “But that spot happens to be a
blind spot for the camera, and it’s right by the emergency exit

hallway.
It couldn’t capture what exactly happened. You can only see
Mrs. Miller walk in, and then… come out looking the way she
does now.”
In the video, you could only see Mrs. Miller disappear into the
hallway entrance. A moment later, when she reappeared, she
looked devastated and unsteady.
“Someone must have said something to her, or shown her
something!”
Madeleine was both anxious and furious. “Otherwise, Mrs.
Miller wouldn’t be like this. Her mood has been very stable
lately!”
Roderick gripped his phone, his knuckles turning white.
He thought for a moment, then called Gerry.
“Find a way to check on everyone who might have been in the
emergency hallway at that time.”
After Madeleine and Roderick left, Rebecca hurried over to look
after Kevin.
Chapter 313
Knowing the child was sensitive, she held his hand to comfort
him, afraid the little guy would worry.
“Kevin, don’t worry. Everything will be okay.”
The little guy nodded, being unusually well–behaved.
Rebecca couldn’t be away for too long. There were still many
guests to greet in the front hall, and as part of the host family,
she couldn’t be absent for long.
She knelt down, straightened Kevin’s collar, and said softly,
“Kevin, I need to go help Grandpa greet the guests. How about
you let Mr. Shaw stay here with you?
Mr. Shaw is a brilliant university professor. He knows a lot, so
you can ask him anything.”
Kevin lifted his clear, big eyes to look at the gentle and refined
Adrian beside him, then nodded obediently. “Okay, Aunt
Rebecca, you can go. I’ll be good.”
Rebecca’s heart melted completely. She gave Adrian a few
more instructions before hurrying back to the front hall.
Adrian looked at the overly quiet and sensible little boy in front of him and pushed up his glasses.
Chapter 313
He usually interacted with university students or calm
researchers in the lab; he rarely spent time alone with a child
this young.
For a moment, he didn’t know how to start a conversation,
appearing a bit stiff and “old–fashioned.”
He sat down next to Kevin and, after a moment of silence,
found an opening. “Kevin, what kind of books do you usually
like to read?”
Kevin thought for a moment and answered seriously:
“I like science picture books with illustrations, and… the
mechanical diagrams in my dad’s study.”
