Charlie let out a helpless shrug as he retrieved the cheque from his pocket and handed it to Elaine. “Mom, here’s the cheque.”
With excitement bubbling inside her, Elaine eagerly accepted the cheque and dashed straight to the registration counter.
Seeing the mixture of anxiety and excitement on Elaine’s face, Charlie realized she intended to keep the leftover money. He sighed, turning back toward the ward.
Upon his arrival at the ward, Claire asked curiously, “Did my mom manage to catch up with you?”
Charlie nodded and replied, “Yes, Mom wanted me to give her the cheque so she could cover the hospitalization fee instead.”
“Okay.” Claire could only nod, feeling a sense of helplessness wash over her.
She had always been aware of her mother’s materialistic tendencies and her insatiable greed for money. Claire knew that Elaine would undoubtedly concoct all sorts of schemes, especially since she was aware of the refund amount of one hundred sixty thousand dollars from the cheque.
However, Claire felt unable to voice her concerns. She understood her mother’s character far too well; if she tried to stop her, Elaine would surely throw a dramatic fit, making it seem as if her life was in utter despair.

Meanwhile, Elaine rushed to the registration counter, placing the cheque before the cashier. “I’m here to pay for Jacob Wilson’s hospitalization fee.”
The cashier nodded and opened Jacob’s file to review his hospitalization details. “You can pay a deposit of twenty thousand dollars today. Any additional charges will be billed later, and we’ll refund you if there’s a surplus at the end of his stay,” she explained.
“Alright.” Elaine’s excitement was palpable as she slid the cheque toward the cashier. “You can use this cheque for the deposit, and please transfer the remaining balance to my personal bank account.”
Elaine then produced her bank card, handing it over to the cashier. “No rush, just ensure you transfer the balance to this card.”
The cashier nodded and picked up the cheque, but her expression quickly shifted to shock as she glanced at it.
Elaine noticed the cashier’s reaction and mistakenly assumed she was just trying to complicate matters. Frustrated, she snapped, “What’s the problem?! Hurry up and complete the payment and transfer! I have other things to do!”
Regaining her composure, the cashier looked at Elaine, now irritated by her attitude. She tossed the cheque back at Elaine and said, “Are you out of your mind? Do you really think you can trick me with this phony cheque? Do you want me to call the police and report you for fraud? You must be delusional!”
Elaine, taken aback, felt a wave of cold sweat wash over her. Oh no! Something terrible was about to unfold!
How could this one hundred million dollar cheque possibly be real?
Her daughter had clearly told her that the cheque was for one hundred eighty thousand dollars. Therefore, this one hundred million dollar cheque had to belong to Charlie!
That insufferable brat! He had become so accustomed to deceiving the wealthy that he must have developed a taste for it! How could he carry around a fake one hundred million dollar cheque? He nearly landed her in serious trouble!
Elaine was unsure whether Charlie’s actions were intentional or accidental, but she now had proof of his deceit.
Who gave him the nerve to lie to her?! Full of annoyance, Elaine resolved to confront Charlie in front of her daughter so she could witness the cheque herself!
No matter what, she was determined to ensure her daughter divorced this big fat liar today!
