“I’ll take him to Serenity’s place. She’ll look after him.”
Josh was eager to assist his best friend.
Duncan cautioned him, “Zachary is drunk and rambling. If he were to say those things in front of Serenity, it would only make matters worse.”
Josh hesitated. “I’ll drive him to Wildridge Manor instead.”
Duncan agreed with this arrangement.
The three of them exited the bar. Duncan helped Zachary into Josh’s car, exchanged a few words, and watched as Josh drove off. Then, he called a cab for himself.
During the ride back to York’s residence, Zachary occasionally shouted. One moment he declared, “Serenity, I love you! Don’t leave me!” The next, he retorted, “What more do you want from me? I don’t need you!”
He kept cycling through these phrases.
This was a battle between love and pride—his affection would dominate one moment, only for his ego to take over the next.
More than an hour later, Josh arrived at Wildridge Manor.
He had called Grandma May ahead of time, so she was waiting for him at the entrance.
“Grandma May.”
Josh parked the car and greeted her. “I apologize for disturbing you at such a late hour.”
“No, I’m the one who should apologize for asking you to bring Zack back at this time.”
Grandma May instructed the bodyguards to assist Zachary out of the car. Seeing that he was so intoxicated he could barely stand, she asked Josh, “How much did that boy drink?”
“A few bottles. He got so drunk that he started rambling, so I didn’t feel it was wise to send him to Serenity. I was worried she’d be even angrier if she heard what he said.”
“What did he say?”
Josh didn’t hold back and recounted the ridiculous things Zachary had said to Grandma May.
Grandma May scoffed. “I’d call him a man if he had the guts to say that in front of her.”
“Front of Serenity.”
“Grandma May, Zachary is just depressed and venting. Tomorrow, when he sobers up, he’ll cling to Serenity again like gum.”
Grandma May replied, “In vino veritas. You should look up what that means.”
Josh was left speechless.
Fortunately, he hadn’t sent Zachary to Serenity. Otherwise, like Grandma May, Serenity might think Zachary was revealing his true feelings after drinking.
“Do you want to come in for a glass of water before you go?”
“No, thank you, Grandma May. I’ll leave now; I have plans for tomorrow.”
Grandma May knew that Josh was pursuing Jasmine and smiled. “All right, you can head back now.”
After Josh left, she instructed the bodyguards, “Move a deck chair to the pool and let Zack lie there for the night. The cold will help him sober up.”
“Old Mrs. York,” a bodyguard protested.
Grandma May’s expression darkened. “Did you not hear what I said? Since he enjoys drowning his sorrows in alcohol, I’ll help him. Do as I say. No matter what happens tomorrow, he won’t dare do anything to you with me around.”
