Brandt replied respectfully, then expressed his concern, “It’s cold and windy outside, sir. We should go back inside. You haven’t eaten anything since you got up today.”
Zachary remained still and asked Brandt, “Will she return if I faint from hunger?”
Brandt was left speechless.
Zachary offered a wry smile. “I was just asking. I won’t neglect my health. I still want to have many children and grandchildren with Seren and live with her until our hair turns gray. I won’t reach that old age if I starve myself.”
Brandt quickly reassured him, “The missus eats and drinks well. I admire her mindset.”
He was terrified that Zachary would intentionally starve himself to the point of fainting. If the missus didn’t return, he feared Zachary might starve to death.
“She… She doesn’t love me as much as I love her.”
That was why she could afford to be a bit more ruthless.
“Jim,” Zachary called out in a low voice.
Jim hurried over without delay.
“Get the car. I want to go back to the manor for a few days.”
“Yes, sir.”
Jim quickly notified the driver.
A few minutes later, Zachary’s luxury car left the grand villa and sped toward Wildridge Manor.
In the manor lounge, Grandma May was savoring a cup of coffee made by the maid.
Tania said to her mother-in-law, “Mom, you’re getting older and already have trouble sleeping. Drinking coffee will only worsen it.”
“Coffee doesn’t affect my sleep. It’s Zack and Seren that keep me awake,” Grandma May replied.
She took two sips of her coffee. “I need to be alert to think of ways to help them.”
Tania responded, “Are you still considering intervening at this point? Let them handle it themselves. Zack and Serenity only—”
You ended up in this situation because you intervened in the first place. I always believed that Serenity and Zack came from different worlds, but you insisted on bringing them together.
“You should have anticipated this day would arrive. Zack will undoubtedly return to confront you. He doesn’t even need to take action; he just has to show you that deadpan expression of his every day and follow you around. You won’t be able to get rid of him, and it’s sure to drive you crazy.”
Grandma May spat out her coffee.
She coughed several times, stopped Tania from patting her back, and grabbed a tissue to clean herself up. She asked her daughter-in-law, “Tania, do you think it’s too late for me to hide? I would have forgotten the way that brat seeks revenge on me if you hadn’t reminded me.”
Back then, she nagged her grandson daily about repaying her by marrying Serenity.
Now, Zachary would mimic her behavior. He would appear in front of her all day, wearing that serious, gloomy expression and looking at her resentfully. Even without him saying a word, Grandma May would feel so guilty she’d want to find a hole to hide in.
The saying “those who play with fire will eventually get burned” was certainly true.
Grandma May had played with fire a bit too much.
“Do you think you can hide in peace? Zack is emotionally detached by nature. He either doesn’t fall in love or falls deeply. Right now, he’s the one suffering the most. Serenity’s feelings for him aren’t as strong as his for her, and she’s furious with him at the moment. She’s probably handling it better than he is.
“Zack is still being stubborn. You said he knocked Serenity out to keep her. Just look at his reaction during this emotional crisis… This is all because of you and Dad!”
Tania ended up venting her frustrations about her in-laws quite a bit.
Zachary was selected as the heir of York Corporation while he was still an infant, and he was raised by his grandparents.
Tania acknowledged that her in-laws did an outstanding job in raising her son. She believed that if she had been permitted to discipline and educate him as his mother, she might not have achieved such a positive outcome.
Nonetheless, her in-laws did not teach her son how to love others.
