Clive was at a loss for words. The changes in Zachary were a real revelation for him.
“I’m hanging up if there’s nothing else. I need to put my wife to bed before I can sneak out to see you,” he said.
Clive was taken aback. “Don’t talk as if we’re having an affair.”
“Yuck. As if I’d ever have an affair with you,” Zachary retorted before abruptly ending the call.
With his adversary hanging up on him, Clive pulled the phone away from his ear and clicked his tongue in frustration. He muttered to himself, “I could say the same about you. As if I’d ever have an affair with you.”
“Honey, who are you having an affair with? Do you have a mistress? Who is that miserable wretch?” Alice inquired, having overheard Clive’s murmurs as she exited the bathroom. Furious, she approached him with a serious expression.
She was already upset with him. Clive had the opportunity to take her to a movie for a change to relive their date nights, but he ended up dozing off in his chair once they arrived. This irritated Alice.
In the end, they left before the movie concluded.
Once outside the theater, Clive regained his energy. He used to watch even the most cringe-worthy romance films when they first started dating, staying for the entire credits while remembering the plot better than she did. Now, married, he would fall asleep the moment they stepped into the theater.
The difference before and after marriage was striking. Clive no longer made the effort to appear interested.
“Alice, what are you thinking? I was just on the phone with Zachary,” he said.
Alice’s eyes widened. “You were on the phone with Zachary discussing having an affair? You two…”
Clive replied,
“Honey, where is your mind drifting off to? We’ve been married for years. You should know by now that your husband is straight.”
“How am I supposed to know if you’re into both?”
Clive was left speechless.
