Chapter 624
“Why isn’t my uncle back yet?”
“He’s at a business dinner and won’t be home until midnight.”
Shawn’s younger sister was still in college. Now that it was winter break, she had gone traveling with friends and would return before the new year.
There was no one else in the house.
The aunt and niece settled onto the sofa while Shawn sat next to them, nervously watching his mother.
“What do you want to talk about, Jas?”
“Aunt Rachel, I want to make it clear that this isn’t Serenity’s fault. Please listen to what I have to say before getting upset. You can be angry with your son, but don’t take it out on Serenity.”
Jasmine felt it was important to give her aunt a fair warning and ensure Serenity’s safety.
“I won’t come over to your place if you take it out on Serenity, Aunt Rachel.”
Mrs. Lowe replied with a smile, “What’s going on? You make it sound very serious. Why would I blame Serenity? She has been friends with you for years. I watched her grow up. She’s a sensible young woman, and I like her. Why would I take it out on her?”
“Tell me what’s happening. What did Shawn do that involves Serenity?”
Before Jasmine could respond, Shawn jumped in. Looking intently at his mother, he said seriously, “Mom, I love Serenity, and I have for years, but Jas doesn’t support me in this. She even stopped me from pursuing Serenity, saying that you would never allow us to be together.”
“Mom, you said you like Serenity. Do I have your blessing to be with her?”
The smile on Mrs. Lowe’s face froze.
She turned to her niece and asked, “Jasmine, isn’t Serenity married?”
“Yes, she is. She and her husband are doing well together. She has turned Shawn down, but Shawn won’t give up on her.”
“Alone.” Mrs. Lowe then turned to face her son, Shawn, who was staring at her expectantly. In the next moment, she slapped him hard on the shoulder, causing Shawn to topple over the armrest of the sofa from the impact.
“Shawn, is Serenity the only woman left in the world? How could you fall for her? I can’t believe you’re pursuing a married woman. Have you lost your mind? She…”
Realizing her niece was present, Mrs. Lowe refrained from speaking ill of Serenity. Instead, she said to Jasmine, “I understand, Jasmine. You should head back. I’ll talk to Shawn.”
“When did this start, Jas? Was it before or after Serenity got married?”
“After she got married,” Jasmine replied.
Mrs. Lowe frowned. “Serenity never viewed Shawn as anything more than a brother, Aunt Rachel. I tried to stop him, but he wouldn’t listen. Can you talk some sense into him and make him stop harassing Serenity? She and her husband have already had a few arguments because of this.”
Mrs. Lowe responded, “I see. At least I know where Serenity stands.”
She felt furious, but she knew it wasn’t Serenity’s fault. Despite her anger, she couldn’t blame Serenity. Having watched Serenity grow up, Mrs. Lowe knew her well enough to recognize that Serenity’s feelings for her son were familial, akin to those of an older sister toward a younger sibling. The way Serenity looked at Shawn held no romantic sentiment.
It never occurred to Mrs. Lowe that her son was the one who had feelings for Serenity.
