Hank was reluctant to let Liberty return to work. The woman had been quite capable before her marriage. If she were to re-enter the workforce, she would quickly regain the confidence she had lost, and she wouldn’t allow herself to be walked all over anymore. Allowing Liberty to have a second child seemed like the best option, as they would continue to use her children against her.
“Mom, you and Dad are getting old. It’s already tiring for you both to help take care of Lucas. Why should I let you continue to struggle? Just let Hank persuade Liberty to help out; it will save a lot of effort,” she suggested.
Olivia contemplated this and replied, “It would be wonderful if Liberty agrees. Hank, your sister has a point. You two should think about having a second child—maybe even a few more sons. Our family could use more male children.”
After a brief pause, she added quietly, “The woman you’re seeing on the side can’t compare to Liberty. Jessica seems more interested in your money.”
Olivia understood that Jessica’s temperament was challenging. Unlike Liberty, she wouldn’t be inclined to work hard without complaint. Ultimately, Liberty had feelings for Hank, which is why she had devoted herself to their small family over the years.
“No matter how great a lover may be, once she becomes your wife, she’ll end up like Liberty now,” Olivia advised her son earnestly. “If you give Liberty the means to regain her figure—through money for fitness, skincare products, and beautiful clothes—she would be just as appealing as Jessica.”
“Mom, please don’t mention Jessica in our home.”
Hank could no longer tolerate his mother’s suggestions. He was currently filled with resentment towards Liberty, but he held back his feelings for the sake of his family.
“Once my son starts preschool next year, I’ll kick Liberty out and file for divorce!”
“I’ll take your advice. I’ll pick up a small gift after work tonight to sweeten the deal and bring it up again. As for having a second child, I can have one with Jessica instead.”
Hank had no intention of having another child with Liberty.
His mind was consumed with thoughts of how to win Jessica over.
Every day, he could see her and touch her, but he couldn’t fully connect with her. It was no wonder he felt restless.
Liberty emerged from the kitchen.
The conversation among the three immediately halted.
Hank set his son down, stood up, and said to Liberty, “I’m heading back to the office to work overtime.”
