Chapter 1012

The chilly spring weather and her soak in the icy water caused Carrie to catch a cold. With her fever rising in the middle of the night, Mrs. Newman promptly contacted the family doctor. After examining Carrie, the doctor prescribed medication. Mrs. Newman administered the medicine to her daughter and remained by her side.

Mrs. Newman only left Carrie’s bedroom once her fever had subsided.

“Where’s Camryn? Didn’t she return last night?”

At the mention of her elder daughter, Mrs. Newman’s affection turned into a scowl. “That blind girl got Ms. Stone’s assistance purely by chance. That country girl was also on her side.”

“That country girl, who has no parents, thinks she’s all that after marrying into a wealthy family. Carrie would have been fine if she had just stayed out of our affairs. That country girl acts quickly; she must spend a lot of time at the gym.”

The couple discussed last night’s incident as they walked down the stairs.

Mrs. Newman harbored a deep resentment towards Serenity. If it weren’t for her, her daughter wouldn’t have fallen ill or been embarrassed.

“Camryn’s business opens at eight o’clock in the morning. She should be out by now.”

Mr. Newman replied softly, “Carrie went too far this time. No matter what, Camryn is her sister. What will people think of Carrie if she keeps harassing Camryn? Carrie is already twenty; soon it will be her turn to marry. Who would want to marry her if she behaves like this?”

“Carrie is the best. It’s not like we lack money. I’ll find her the perfect man if she feels ready for marriage. He should marry into our family; I don’t want her taking someone else’s name.”

“She’ll feel more at home in our family rather than being someone’s daughter-in-law.”

“Don’t defend Camryn.”

“She’s a troublemaker and a devil. Carrie’s reputation wouldn’t be so poor if it weren’t for her. I told you, we should have left her to die.”

“Honey!” Mr. Newman exclaimed with a serious expression.

Mrs. Newman pursed her lips and remained silent for a moment.

After a while, she said, “Carrie was humiliated and put through hell. Aren’t you going to do anything about it?”

“What do you want me to do? It doesn’t matter that the Hunt girl is lowborn; she’s Mrs. York now. That’s a fact. Everybody knows Mr. York is an affectionate husband, and Elisa is not someone to take lightly.”

“It was excessive of Carrie. Usually, she and Camryn have harmless fun, but this time she crossed the line by trying to drug Camryn. You need to talk some sense into Carrie when she recovers. Stop her from ruining Camryn’s flower shop.”

“Regardless of the situation, Camryn is my brother’s only daughter.”

“Put together a gift. I’ll take it to York Corporation and meet Mr. York to apologize to him and his wife.”

Mrs. Newman frowned. “The Hunt girl upset both me and Carrie. She even embarrassed Carrie. Why are you apologizing instead of standing up for us?”

“People may fear Mr. York, but we aren’t scared of him. Our family business isn’t located in this city. What could Mr. York possibly do about it?”

Mrs. Newman believed that Zachary didn’t possess the power to destroy their business since they weren’t operating in Wiltspoon. That belief made her view Serenity as no real threat.

Without feeling the need to explain his reasoning, Mr. Newman replied sternly, “Just do as I say. Do you think I don’t feel terrible that our daughter is humiliated, hurt, and sick?

“Mr. York is a dangerous man. We need to offer peace before he comes after us.”
