Silent Dreams Never Die — Author: John Miller 336
Scarlett was a doctor herself–she understood exactly what had happened. Still, after the physician finished speaking, she simply replied, “I understand.”

The doctor hesitated, not wanting to add to her distress, but felt obligated to state the facts. “The procedure has thinned your uterine lining. It may be significantly harder for you to conceive in the future.”
Although Scarlett specialized in pediatrics, her medical training meant she was fully aware of the implications.
She didn’t react dramatically, only responding quietly, “I see.”
Her calmness left the doctor somewhat at a loss. After a final check of her vitals, he quietly left the room.
Alone again, Scarlett pulled the blanket closer and turned onto her side. Tears slipped silently down her cheeks, but she stifled any sound.
Before long, a young nurse entered.
Hearing the faint catch in Scarlett’s breathing, the nurse said gently, “You’ve just had a dilation and curettage–your body needs rest, like a postpartum recovery. Try not to cry; it isn’t good for you now.”
Scarlett murmured a soft acknowledgment.
Once the nurse was gone, the weight of everything pressed down even harder.
The cut on her forehead had already dried, the sting faded into numbness.
Sleep wouldn’t come that night.
Scarlett turned restlessly in the narrow hospital bed, Vincent’s furious words echoing in her mind. What did he really want from her?
It was well past two in the morning when exhaustion finally pulled her under.
But barely had she drifted off when the blanket was yanked away.
Cold air rushed over her, and her
eyes flew
open.
Gradually, the figure beside her bed came into focus–Amanda.
Scarlett lay curled on the mattress, while Amanda stood over her like a vengeful shadow.

“How dare you lay a hand on a child from the Stewart family?” Amanda hissed, each word dripping with venom. “Do you have a death wish?”
Weak and drained, Scarlett looked up but said nothing.
Her silence only fueled Amanda’s rage. She stepped closer and slapped Scarlett hard across the face.
“You ignore me? Who do you think you are?”
Amanda shouted without restraint, showing no regard for the fact that Scarlett was still Vincent’s wife–or that she was lying in a hospital bed.
Scarlett’s head snapped to the side, five vivid finger marks rising on her cheek.
She glared back, eyes red–rimmed. “Is this all you’re capable of now? Petty bullying?”
That set Amanda off completely. She climbed onto the bed, straddling Scarlett, and began hitting and pinching her wherever she could reach.
Too weak to fight back, Scarlett could only endure the assault.
Only when Amanda was out of breath did she stop, panting heavily. Beneath her, Scarlett lay pale and still, a terrifying stillness about her.
Her arms and shoulders were covered with angry red marks.
Surveying her handiwork, Amanda gave a satisfied nod.
But she wasn’t done. Like a wild animal baring its teeth, she dug her nails into Scarlett’s arm and snarled, “You never should have married into this family. You’ve brought nothing but bad luck.
“Why are you staring at me like that? Why don’t you just disappear?
“How dare
you touch a Stewart child? You’re not worth the air you breathe.
“Your whole family is trash. Worthless, the lot of you.”
Scarlett lay motionless, able only to turn her face away from the blows.
She hadn’t the strength to sit up, much less fight back.
And she couldn’t muster the energy to rebut the insults.
Amanda might have stayed longer, but her phone suddenly rang.

Scarlett couldn’t hear what was said on the other end, but she saw Amanda’s expression shift instantly.
“Alright, I understand. I’ll be right there,” Amanda said, her voice tense.
Whatever it was, it was urgent enough to make her abandon her torment of Scarlett.
She didn’t even glance back as she hurried from the room.
Once alone, Scarlett finally caught her breath. But she was too weak to move, left only to watch as the red marks on her skin slowly darkened into bruises.
She didn’t remember falling asleep again–only a haze of exhaustion and the sticky discomfort of sweat and dried tears.
Somewhere between sleep and waking, she heard the door open.
Her nerves were frayed; even the slightest sound brought her eyes open.
A man stood in the doorway–Luke.
Seeing him, Scarlett knew it meant more trouble. She didn’t try to avoid his gaze, only asked wearily, “What now? What do you want?”
