Vincent tightened his grip on his fork. Before he could speak, Xavier interjected, “That’s right, Scarlett–speak freely in front of me. If Vincent has treated you unfairly, I’ll make sure he answers for it.”
Whether Xavier fully meant it or not, his words brought a faint warmth to Scarlett’s heart.
She offered a small, tired smile. “Thank you, Grandpa.”
Then she turned her gaze back to Vincent.
His handsome features were taut with tension.
Scarlett could guess what he was afraid she’d say, but she continued calmly, “At the kindergarten outing today, Vanessa used a very cruel word toward another child. What do you think should be done about it?”
Hearing this, some of the tightness left Vincent’s expression.
After a pause, he asked, “What did she say?”
Scarlett met his eyes. “She called him a bastard.”
Vincent went still, as if he couldn’t quite believe it, and said nothing.
But Scarlett wasn’t letting it go. “Well, Vincent? What should the consequence be?”
He turned the question back on her. “What do you think it should be?”
Scarlett clenched her jaw. “A public apology. And no dinner tonight.”
Vincent frowned. “Is that really necessary?”
“Yes,” she replied without hesitation. “It is.”
For a child who had lost his mother, being called that was a deep, reopening wound.
But Vincent simply waved a hand dismissively. “What if I don’t make her apologize?”
Scarlett had expected that. “It’s your choice. She’s your daughter as much as mine.”
Vincent’s face darkened. “She’s just a little girl. Do you want to punish her into the ground?”
“Yes,” Scarlett said coldly. “She deserves to face consequences.”

Chapter 334 A Fiery Clash
Vincent’s voice rose. “Scarlett, you’re her mother. Do you hear what you’re saying?”
Since their argument began, Xavier hadn’t been able to get a word in.
Watching them go back and forth, he wasn’t sure whom to chide first.

Scarlett looked at Vincent’s anger–twisted face and started to stand, but a sudden warm rush between her legs made her sink back into her chair.
The cramping in her lower abdomen was growing sharper. Cold sweat beaded on her skin.
Even so, she kept her voice steady. “If this were before, no matter how much it hurt you to see it, I would’ve made her apologize. But now… it’s up to you.”
With that, she pressed a hand to her stomach and pushed up from the table.
But after only two steps, she froze.
Looking down, she saw several vivid streaks of blood on her calf.
Heat rushed to her face–how humiliating, to have this happen here, now.
Before she could react further, her vision dimmed, and everything went black.
Scarlett crumpled to the floor, the blood on her leg smearing the polished wood.
The moment she fell, Vincent was on his feet. He crossed the room in quick strides and knelt beside her.
Gently, he tapped her cheek. Her skin was alarmingly pale, almost without color.
A sudden panic gripped him.
Without a word, he scooped her into his arms and carried her out of Ravenshade Villa.
Xavier followed slowly with his cane, unable to keep up. “Vincent!” he called. “Call me when you get to the hospital!”
“I will, Grandpa!” Vincent’s reply trailed behind him.

When Scarlett’s eyes fluttered open, the first thing she saw was Vincent standing by the window, smoking.
She couldn’t tell how many cigarettes he’d gone through–the whole room was thick with the smell.

The stale smoke made her nauseous. She wrinkled her nose. “Vincent… could you outside?”
Her own voice startled her–hoarse and ragged, barely recognizable.
Vincent stubbed out the half–finished cigarette in the ashtray.
Once the ember died, he walked to the bedside and sat in the chair.

His expression was cold and serious. “Scarlett,” he said, his voice low. “Tell me the truth. What really made you faint?”
Scarlett studied his face–the searching, suspicious look in his eyes.
She wasn’t entirely sure what he meant, but the persistent ache in her abdomen told her this wasn’t just her monthly cycle.
Still, she held her ground. “It was cramps. That’s all.”
Vincent’s pupils narrowed. He leaned closer, dropping his voice. “Think carefully. Is there anything you’re not telling me?”
