Larissa had been giving Nightveil a lot to investigate lately and hadn’t wanted to overload her, so she hadn’t yet asked her to look into Gertrude. She never expected to get a lead from Livia.
“This is very valuable information,” Larissa replied. Then she added, “But as I told you, Lucius has Honora now. He knows you’ve been in contact with me and is suspicious. Any more moves from you could be dangerous.”
“Nothing ventured, nothing gained,” Livia said from the other end. “My father has already brought his illegitimate son into the company. The thought of that boy taking over is enough to make me lose sleep. Every time I close my eyes, I see my mother turning in her grave.”
“I’ll be careful. If something does happen to me, my lawyer will deliver the signed share transfer agreement to you. All I ask is that you avenge my mother and me.”
Hearing this, Larissa couldn’t help but feel a grudging respect for Livia.
“I’ll send you a package. It’s an electronic device my father’s company developed. It has real–time location tracking and a self–defense function. If you’re in trouble, I’ll know immediately.”
There was a pause on the other end, then a light laugh.
“Thank you, Ms. Judson.” Her voice, no longer heavy, sounded brighter. “It’s been so long since anyone cared about me like this, not since my mother died. All anyone ever sees in me is my beauty or my value as a marriage alliance. You’re the only one who’s genuinely concerned for my safety.”
Her words made Larissa think of her own past Though she had grown up without her biological parents‘ love, she had been lucky. She had a wonderful adoptive father and villagers who had taught her everything they knew. She had never lacked for love; in fact,
her life had been full.
Larissa pushed the thoughts aside. “Don’t talk like that, it sounds like a eulogy. The ones who deserve to die are your father who betrayed your mother, the mistress who caused her death, and the bastard son who wants to swoop in and take the company they built together. As long as you’re alive, you can deal with them one by one.”

Livia’s “yes” on the other end was firm. “Ms. Judson, I used to not know how to fight back. I thought, what can one woman do? It didn’t matter that I was the legitimate child. As long as I wasn’t a son, my father would cheat and give the company to his mistress’s son.”
