Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 438
“No, I’m not lying! It’s the truth!” Draven crawled toward Haskell, grabbing onto the leg of his wheelchair and sobbing. “I was wrong. I truly know I was wrong. I’ll never do it again. I’ll do whatever you say. I don’t want to be the heir anymore.”
Faith stared at him, dumbfounded by his complete and utter lack of dignity. She could never bring herself to beg like that.
Haskell smiled coolly. “Did you hear that, Faith? My dear brother seems to confirm that Solomon did indeed plan to ‘get rid of me‘ in Africa.”
Faith knew that no matter what she said, Haskell wouldn’t be pretense. “So what if he did? Grandpa gave us a three–month deadline. It was a competition, survival of the fittest. My brother failed to kill you. Are you going to kill me in retaliation?” She scoffed. “Haskell, no matter how powerful you are, you’re not a murderer. That would land you in prison.”
Before he could respond, she continued, “If you killed some nobody, maybe you could pay off the family, or Grandpa could find a scapegoat to take the fall. But if you kill me, my father and brother will never let it go.”
“I have a father and a brother to back me up. But you, Haskell? You have no one. Your mother is dead, and your father and brother both want you gone. If you had died in Africa, Grandpa would have mourned the loss of a promising heir, but no one would have avenged you. I’m different. My family will pursue this to the very end.”
She was confident Haskell wouldn’t dare to touch her.
At the mention of his deceased mother, Haskell’s eyes grew even darker.
“Did you forget about me?” Larissa, who had been watching the scene unfold with amusement, finally spoke. “I’m the one who has his back. If anything ever happens to him, I’m the one who will hunt you down and get revenge.”
A light flickered in Haskell’s eyes. He said nothing, simply gazing at Larissa’s fiercely determined face, his heart swelling in his chest.
She was right. He wasn’t alone. He had her.
“So, Faith,” Larissa continued, taking a small porcelain bottle from her medical kit and rising
to her feet. She walked over to Faith and looked down at her. “You felt so emboldened
because you thought Haskell had no one left to fight for him?”
A smirk played on Faith’s lips. “And what are you, Larissa? You can barely save yourself. You latched onto this cripple that even Honora looked down on because you needed a protector. And you have the audacity to talk about being his backup? About getting revenge for him?”
Larissa opened the bottle, shook out two small pills, and crouched down. With one swift

motion, she seized Faith’s jaw, forcing her mouth open, and tossed the pills inside. She then released her and delivered a sharp chop to Faith’s back, dislodging the pills from her throat and sending them down.
“Cough, cough…”
A bitter taste spread from Faith’s tongue to her throat. She clutched her jaw, her eyes wide with fury. “Larissa, what did you just give me?!”
Larissa stood up, a slow, cruel smile spreading across her face. “Guess.”
