“You’re lying!” Vivica shrieked, pointing a crimson–nailed finger at Larissa. “You know you poisoned
him!*
Larissa just shrugged, her eyes wide with innocence. “If you don’t believe me, Aunt Vivica, feel free to call a doctor to examine him.”
“Do it” Kiernan commanded, his voice cold. “Call the doctor.”
Finley shifted uncomfortably. “Grandpa, a doctor won’t be able to find anything. The poison Larissa used is… unusual. It’s undetectable.”
“If it’s undetectable,” Kiernan retorted, his face hardening, “then it doesn’t exist!”
Avril, relishing her role as chaos–maker, chimed in. “He’s right, Mr. Judson. They’re just making excuses to save their own skin!”
“No, Grandpa, it’s real,” Finley insisted. “I don’t know how she did it, but it’s real. The poison has flare–ups, so…”
He trailed off as he saw the mocking smile on Larissa’s face. He had been about to suggest that they wait for an episode to prove his point, but her expression filled him with a sudden dread. He had the distinct feeling she had another trick up her sleeve.
And she did. The “poison” was derived from Shadow’s saliva, and she could control its effects at will. Unless she triggered it, Finley would feel nothing.
“Well? Finish your sentence,” Kiernan said impatiently.
Finley stammered, unable to speak.
“Whatever your excuse, it doesn’t justify kidnapping Sapphira!” Kiernan slammed his cane on the
floor.
Vivica tried again. “Dad, please, calm down. Sapphira is fine, isn’t she? No harm was done…”
“No harm done?” roared Gloria, Sapphira’s mother, her eyes blazing. “My daughter is fine, so we should just forget it ever happened? You will answer for this today, or we will take matters into our own hands. And I assure you, our methods will be ten times worse.”
Paxton remained silent, his eyes fixed on his father, pleading for mercy.
Vivica, seeing the Turners were implacable, pointed to her husband’s bleeding stomach. “Look at him! Neville stabbed him last night! Isn’t that payment enough?”
“No,” Neville said flatly. He would never forgive Paxton for threatening his wife.
“Paxton,” Kiernan said, his voice filled with sorrow, “ever since we brought Larissa home, you have done nothing but make one mistake after another, all for the sake of a girl who isn’t even your own blood.”
At the mention of her name, Honora tensed. The day that was supposed to be Larissa’s downfall had
become her own.
