Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 285
Vivica’s cry drew the attention of the remaining guests,
Honora, who was now more lucid, instinctively touched her face. She gasped and snatched her hand away as if she’d been burned. Her skin… it felt rough and bloated. It used to be so smooth and delicate, but now it felt like she was touching raw pork.
“My God, if I didn’t know it was Honora, I wouldn’t recognize her. How did her face get so swollen?
“It must be the poison.”
“I wonder if the swelling will go down. What if it’s permanent? That would be horrifying.”
Hearing the whispers about her appearance, Honora panicked.
“Mom, give me a mirror…” she pleaded.
Vivica frowned, a hint of disgust in her eyes. “Honora, maybe you shouldn’t look just yet. I’m afraid you’ll frighten yourself.”
A cold dread washed over Honora. What had happened to her face?
The doctor glanced at Honora before addressing Vivica. “The poison was in her system for too long and had already spread to her head. Although I did my best to neutralize it, my skills are no match for Ms. Judson’s. There will be serious side effects from the residual toxins. The swelling is just one of them. She will likely experience intermittent numbness in her legs as well. We will need to monitor her for further complications.”
“Doctor, will my daughter’s face ever go back to normal?” Vivica asked desperately.
The doctor was frank. “The swelling will only go down once the remaining toxins are purged from her body. As long as they remain, she will never recover.”
Vivica staggered, steadying herself before pressing on. “Is there any way you can help my daughter flush out the toxins completely?”
“The poison has spread through her bloodstream,” the doctor said grimly. “To remove it entirely, you could try a full–body blood transfusion.”
Before Vivica could respond, Honora cried out, “Mom, I want the transfusion!”
She couldn’t bear the thought of living with a disfigured face. It would be a fate worse than death.
“A full–body blood transfusion is not a routine procedure,” the doctor cautioned. “It’s used for specific cases like severe poisoning or certain autoimmune disorders. For your daughter’s situation, the cost will be extremely high, and you would need to secure a sufficient blood supply.”
“Money is no object,” Vivica declared. “We’ll find the blood!”
“A blood transfusion won’t help Honora,” Larissa said, pushing Haskell’s wheelchair slowly toward them. Her tone was dramatic as she laid out the facts. “The poison isn’t just in her blood; it has seeped into her skin tissue. The longer it’s left untreated, the more her skin will begin to ulcerate and rot.”

Chapter 285
The image of her skin decaying made Honora tremble uncontrollably. She bit her lip and shook her head. “No, I don’t want that to happen! I don’t want to be a monster!”
Her eyes met Haskell’s, and in the pools of his irises, she imagined she could see her own grotesque reflection. She quickly covered her face. “Haskell, please don’t look at me…”
Haskell merely spared her a fleeting, indifferent glance before looking away. Her face meant nothing to him. He hadn’t bothered to look at her when she was beautiful, he certainly wasn’t going to start now that it was a swollen mess.
