Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 251
With Crispin blocking his path, Garrick knew he couldn’t get to Larissa. He spun around and ran to his father, Trevor.
“Dad, did you see that? Haskell’s woman, that country girl from the Judson family, she kicked me!”
“Wipe the blood first,” Fraser said, having a butler bring tissues for his brother. Garrick snatched the tissues and dabbed at his nose, glaring venomously at Larissa.
Trevor’s cold gaze swept over Larissa before settling on Haskell. His voice was heavy with authority. “Haskell, is this how you manage your woman and your assistant?”
Haskell met his uncle’s gaze calmly. “Uncle Trevor, Garrick was pushing my wheelchair and lost his grip, nearly causing me to fall down the steps. Larissa was just being protective. She didn’t mean any harm.”
“And you expect me to just let it go with a simple ‘she didn’t mean any harm?” Trevor’s
voice hardened.
“What else do you suggest? Today is my engagement party with Larissa. It’s not a day for conflict,” Haskell replied smoothly. “I’m willing to overlook the fact that Garrick insisted on pushing my wheelchair when he clearly couldn’t handle it. So, I would appreciate it if you didn’t make things difficult for my fiancée.”
Seeing Haskell’s refusal to punish Larissa or his assistant, Trevor’s anger flared. “Haskell! Is that your final word on the matter?”
“Then what would you have me do, Uncle Trevor?” Haskell asked, feigning helplessness.
“If you want Larissa to marry into this family, then you will let my son slap her a hundred times in front of everyone here! As for your insubordinate assistant, whichever leg he used to kick my son, I want it broken!”
Garrick threw the blood–soaked tissues to the ground. “My dad is right, Haskell! That’s the only way I’ll be satisfied!”
“Then I’m afraid I can’t grant you that favor, Uncle,” Haskell said with a sigh. “If you’re still not satisfied, you can always take it up with my grandfather.”
At the mention of his father, Trevor’s face grew even darker. “Haskell, don’t you dare try to use your grandfather to pressure me! We were just in the study with him discussing the succession. You’re about to be cast aside, don’t you know that? Do you really think he’s still going to protect you and this fiancée of yours?”
“Then why don’t you go ask Grandpa Zoltan yourself?” Larissa cut in. “If you won’t, I will!”
With that, she calmly pushed Haskell’s wheelchair into the hall, then cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted toward the second–floor study, “Grandpa Zoltan! Could

you come out for a moment? We have a situation!”
The crowd was speechless.
Avril, who had been enjoying the show, nearly choked.
This Judson girl didn’t play by any rules at all, did she? This was fascinating.
Even Trevor frowned, wondering what the hell she was up to.
A moment later, the study door opened, and Zoltan slowly walked out. He stood at the railing, looking down at Larissa.
“Was that you calling me, Larissa? What’s happened?”
Before Larissa could speak, Garrick spun around and yelled up to the second floor, “Grandpa, that girl and Crispin just ganged up on me! Look, my nose is bleeding!”
To his surprise, instead of sympathy, Garrick received a stern rebuke from Zoltan. “Garrick, do not refer to her as ‘that girl.‘ She is your cousin Haskell’s fiancée. Soon, she will be your cousin–in–law.”
Garrick was stunned that his grandfather would side with Larissa. Trevor, too, was taken aback by Zoltan’s response.
