Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 233
Sapphira’s tone shifted. “So, Josette, what did you want with my Larissa last night?”
Josette’s eyes, heavy with arrogance, flickered. “Nothing important. I just heard that my brother’s newly acknowledged daughter is getting married to Haskell tomorrow, and I came to offer my congratulations.”
She shot a disdainful look at Larissa. “I’ll give you my gift at the party tomorrow. Today, I just wanted to meet the so–called true heiress who made such a splash at her welcome party.”
Larissa’s voice was calm but cutting. “If you were so curious about me, Aunt Josette, why didn’t you come to my welcome party?”
Josette was clearly caught off guard by the direct question. She stammered for a moment before retorting, “Because I was busy, of course. Just like you were too busy with your pathetic little herb garden to see me last night.
Larissa simply said, “Oh,” then added, “It doesn’t matter. Your presence or absence is
irrelevant to me.”
Josette’s face flushed with anger. “Paxton and Vivica were right. You have no manners at
all.”
Seeing Josette finally drop the pretense, Sapphira’s expression hardened. “Josette, if you came here today to cause trouble for Larissa, just like they did, then you are not welcome here.”
Josette abandoned all pretense of civility. “You’re right, Sapphira, I’m not here to congratulate her. I’m here to warn this little brat! Just because she’s the true Judson heiress doesn’t mean she can do whatever she wants and disrespect everyone!
I hear she’s turned this family upside down since she arrived. Leopold is still lying in a hospital bed, Finley has a limp, and Honora is being mocked as a fraud all over the city.
I also heard Dad plans to hand over Starlight Media to her next month, and Judson Pharmaceuticals to your husband in six months, all because she claims she can secure a partnership with the Schwartz family. Well, I don’t buy it. My husband knows people in the Schwartz family, and he hasn’t heard a word about any collaboration. For a little girl to make such a bold claim is utterly absurd!”
Larissa shrugged. “Then I guess your husband doesn’t know the right people. Otherwise, Uncle Paxton would have sealed a deal with them long ago. Are you sure your
husband doesn’t just know a gardener or a butler at the Schwartz estate and calls that ‘knowing people‘?”
Josette’s face turned cold at the insult to her husband. “Insolent girl! Watch your tone!”

Larissa chuckled. “Aunt Josette, this is my home, okay? If anyone is being insolent, it’s
you.”
“Your home?” Josette sneered. “This entire estate belongs to my dad, Kiernan. He could throw you out on the street any day! Then you’d be right back where you started, homeless and destitute.”
Larissa remained unfazed by the venomous words. A calm smile played on her lips. “That’s fine. It’s just a mansion. I have thirty percent of Starlight Media and ten percent of Judson Pharmaceuticals. Either of those is worth more than this house.”
The arrogant smirk on Josette’s face vanished replaced by sheer shock. “What did you say?”
