The Throne of Thorns Novel Chapter 228

Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 228

Chapter 228

Haskell’s voice cut through the air again.

“Stop. Don’t say another word. You’re contaminating the air.”

Larissa nearly burst out laughing. Did Haskell really have to be so brutal when Honora had worked so hard to set the mood?

Honora fell silent again. After a long moment, she spoke, her voice strained with embarrassment.

“Believe me or not, Haskell, I’ve said what I needed to say. I don’t know if you’ve accepted Larissa out of necessity, but I don’t mind. If you ever change your mind, I’ll be waiting for

you.

I won’t disturb you any longer. I’m leaving now.”

“Good.”

There was a soft rustling sound, and then the line cleared.

“Did you hear that?” Haskell’s pleasant voice came through.

Larissa grinned. “I heard.”

“Are you happy?”

“Very.”

“Good.”

“I never knew you had it in you,” Larissa teased

“Just wanted to give you a little entertainment for the drive. Didn’t want you to get bored.”

Larissa’s smile widened. “Well, it worked. I was thoroughly entertained. Feel free to do it again sometime.”

“No, I hope there won’t be a next time,” Haskell said, his voice laced with a deadpan seriousness. “I wasn’t kidding. Her words were genuinely polluting my ears.”

“If she has any self–awareness, she won’t try that again,” Larissa said.

“Let’s hope she’s not that thick–skinned,” Haskell replied fervently. After a brief pause, his tone softened. “Alright, that’s enough entertainment for one day. Focus on driving.”

“Okay! I’d rather not get into another car accident.”

Hanging up, Larissa felt an inexplicable sense of exhilaration. Her feelings for Haskell, it seemed, were beginning to extend beyond just his good looks.

Back at the East Wing Villa, Larissa took a nap had dinner, and then went out to the newly

tilled herb garden in the backyard. She was sowing seeds and adding fertilizer when, just as she was closing the fence gate, she heard someone call her name.

“Larissa.”

It was the middle–aged steward from the West Wing.

Larissa latched the gate and turned around. “What is it?”

“Your aunt Josette is back for your engagement party. She’s waiting for you in the main hall and requests your presence within ten minutes.”

The short message was packed with information. First, the messenger was from the West Wing, not Jett, Kiernan’s head butler. This meant her aunt had come to see her before even notifying the family patriarch.

Second, the ten–minute deadline.

“What an ego,” she thought.

Finally, her aunt Josette hadn’t even bothered to show up for her welcome party, a clear sign of disrespect. It was obvious this visit wasn’t a friendly one. She could guess what her aunt wanted, and she would find out for sure tomorrow.

As for tonight…

Let her wait.

“Tell my dear Aunt Josette that I’m busy.”

The steward was clearly taken aback by her blunt refusal. He stammered for a moment before saying, “Are you sure about that, Larissa? You have time to play in the dirt, but you don’t have time to see your aunt? If I report this back to her, she won’t be pleased.”

Larissa, who had started to walk away, stopped at his thinly veiled threat. She turned, a slow smile spreading across her face as she looked at the man in the gold–rimmed glasses. “Are you threatening me?”
