Damian, likely sensing her discomfort, spoke up in an effort to divert her, “Would you like to meet my mother?”
Scarlett was taken aback. “What?”
Keeping his gaze politely averted, he continued, “She’s a wonderful person. She’s been wanting to meet you for a while now.” While he said this partly to ease the awkward moment, the sentiment was genuine.
Once she finished, Scarlett quickly adjusted her clothing, flushed the toilet, and said softly, “I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to meet her.”
Damian finally turned to look at her, a broad smile spreading across his face. “You’ll have to meet her eventually anyway.”
Seeing how serious he seemed, Scarlett frowned. “But I never considered that.”
“The day will come,” Damian said, his smile persistent.
“No, it won’t,” Scarlett replied, her tone firmer.
Hearing this, a flicker of annoyance crossed Damian’s features. Disregarding the IV bag he was holding, he used his free arm to scoop Scarlett up effortlessly. In a low, resolute voice, he stated, “I say it will.”
His tone was commanding. He carried her back to the hospital bed and deposited her there gently. After re–hanging the IV bag, he sat on the edge of the mattress, leaning in close.
His larger frame cast a shadow over her as he looked into her eyes, a playful yet determined smile in his own. “You can’t out–stubborn me. Why not just humor me this once?”
His plea held a childish, wheedling quality that left Scarlett momentarily speechless. She averted her gaze, staring blankly ahead as she scrambled for a
Just then, her phone chimed with a new text notification.
response.
Seizing the excuse, Scarlett quickly said, “Let me check my phone. It might be from the hospital.”
The reason was plausible enough. Damian nodded and leaned back slightly, giving her space.
Scarlett picked up her phone and opened the messaging app. Her expression shifted immediately upon seeing the sender.

It was a message from Vincent. The text read, “Come back to Ravenshade Villa.”
The commanding tone grated on her. She had no intention of replying and instinctively wanted to lock her screen.
Before she could, a second message arrived. “We need to discuss the divorce again.”
Seeing it concerned the divorce, she typed back, “What is there to discuss?”
Vincent replied, “I want to add a clause.”
Confused, Scarlett wrote, “Explain the gist of it here.”
Two minutes later, his response came. “After the divorce, you will have no further contact with Vanessa.”
Scarlett didn’t understand and sent a simple question mark.
Another message followed quickly. “I will provide additional financial compensation.”
But Scarlett was unwilling. “Vanessa is my own child, my flesh and blood.”
Vincent’s reply was cold. “You gave birth to her. But if you don’t mind watching her bond with Sabrina as her new mother, then suit yourself.”
Reading his harsh words, Scarlett’s fingers flew over the screen. “Once the mandatory separation period is over, we’ll finalize the divorce. Regarding Vanessa, I can’t promise complete non–involvement, but I will minimize contact as much as possible.”
After sending the message, she placed the phone face down on the bedside table, not waiting to see if he would reply.
While Scarlett had been texting, Damian had been watching her intently.
Once she set the phone down, he asked gently, “Was it Vincent?”
Scarlett nodded. “Yes.”
Damian could have easily glanced at the screen to read the exchange, but for some reason, he resisted the urge. He asked instead, “What did he want?”
Not wanting to elaborate, Scarlett offered a vague answer. “Nothing important. He was just… checking in.”
“Checking in?” Damian repeated with a derisive snort. “If he were genuinely concerned, he’d be here at the hospital with you, not typing out a few hollow words on a screen.”

He had taken her statement at face value, imagining their prolonged silence had been over something significant. To learn it was merely about “checking in” felt absurd.
Seeing Damian’s growing impatience, Scarlett offered a weak defense. “He’s probably busy.”
“Right, busy,” Damian retorted bluntly. “Busy spending time with his girlfriend.”
Scarlett said nothing more, choosing silence. Her offhand explanation had provoked a stronger reaction from Damian than she’d anticipated.
