As Damian took in the bruises and wounds covering every visible part of Scarlett’s body, his heart clenched like a fist.

The pain was so sharp that he struck himself hard across the face–twice.

Tears blurred his vision.

Gazing down at Scarlett sleeping deeply, he whispered, “Scarlett, I don’t know if you can hear me. And I don’t care anymore–not about you having a husband and a daughter, not even about whether you love me. From now on, I’m not walking away from you again.”

After saying it, he slumped into the chair beside her bed and eventually dozed off.

Once Damian’s breathing steadied in sleep, Scarlett’s eyes opened.

She studied the red marks his own hands had left on his face, and her eyes welled up.

She had heard every word.

But were those words true, or just another performance?

Scarlett couldn’t tell, so she pushed the thought away.

Early the next morning, when she opened her eyes again, the room was empty. Sunlight streamed through the window, and the brightness kept the fear at bay.

She shifted slightly, and immediately Damian’s voice came through. “Just freshening up in the bathroom. I’ll be right out. Don’t worry.”

She turned toward the sound and realized her phone was propped up, video–calling him.

After a pause, she replied quietly, “Okay.”

Just then, the hospital room door swung open.

Scarlett instinctively tensed, thinking it might be Violet–her mind raced with escape plans. But instead, Amanda walked in.

Seeing who it was, Scarlett relaxed, though only slightly.

Amanda carried a small paper bag, which she tossed onto the bedside table with little grace. “Vincent was worried you’d starve in here all alone,” she said, her tone sour. “Sent me to check

on you.”

Scarlett frowned. “I don’t need your fake concern.”

Amanda let out a contemptuous laugh. “You think I want to be here? I could be at home binge- watching my shows, tending my garden, or feeding my koi. Anything beats looking at you, washed up and pathetic.”

Scarlett almost smiled at that. “Then get out.”

Amanda’s temper flared. “You’ve got some nerve, Scarlett, talking to me like that. Do you really still think you’re some princess?”

She sneered, leaning closer. “Take a good look in the mirror. You’re no princess. You should be thanking your lucky stars Vincent married you–it was the one break you ever got.”

Scarlett’s laugh came out colder this time, but she stayed silent.

Amanda scowled. “Too good to even answer me? You think I’m just some pushover?” She rolled up her sleeves. “I’ll teach you some respect.”

But Scarlett didn’t feel the same panic she had that night alone. Damian was here.

Just as Amanda raised her hand, the bathroom door opened.

Damian stood leaning against the frame, dressed in gray lounge pants and a t–shirt. He didn’t move closer, just leveled a steady gaze at Amanda and said, “Go ahead. Touch her.”

Amanda spun around. When she recognized him, she faltered for a second. “Damian?”

He was calmly running an electric shaver along his jaw. A faint smile touched his lips. “Mrs. Stewart. Long time no see.”

She bristled. “Don’t ‘long time no see‘ me. We’re not friends.“,

Damian chuckled softly. “Still as charming as ever, I see.”

There had always been rivalry between the Stewart and Langley families–not just between Vincent and Damian, but across both households.

Amanda lifted her chin. “I have every reason to be proud. Look at who my son is.”

Damian’s smile turned mocking. “That deadbeat Vincent? Sounds a lot more impressive coming from you.”

Her eyes widened in outrage. “You’re one to talk! Look at yourself.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Look at what? How I manage to stay handsome and surrounded by beautiful women?”

“You’re shameless,” Amanda spat.

Damian shrugged, but his expression hardened in an instant. “So. Are you going to leave now, or do I have to make you?”

Amanda shot back, “And what gives you the right to stay?”

Slowly, Damian repeated her words, “What gives me the right…?”
