Chapter 331 Comfort After the Storm
From the looks of it, Vanessa had already taken quite a beating.
So Eric stepped forward and called out loudly, “Clara, stop! She’s had enough.”
Hearing that, Clara finally stilled her hands.

She was breathing heavily, sweat dampening her hair. Pushing herself up from Vanessa, she walked over to Eric.
Vanessa lay on the ground, past caring about pride or appearances, and simply cried out loud and raw.
Each sob felt like a twist in Scarlett’s heart.
Sabrina slipped past Scarlett and Damian and hurried toward Vanessa.
Meanwhile, Clara reached Eric. She lifted a hand–smudged and a little bloody–and placed it on his shoulder.
“If she ever talks to you like that again, tell me. I’ll shut her up myself.”
Eric felt a warm swell in his chest, but seeing Clara’s wild hair and flushed face, he couldn’t help adding, “You look like a total tomboy right now.”
Clara swatted him lightly on the head. “Looking for another beating?”
Eric instinctively raised his arms in defense. “Okay, okay, sorry.”
Satisfied, Clara lowered her hand. “That’s better.”
Eric dropped his guard and said earnestly, “Thanks, Clara.”
Clara found the sentiment too mushy. She rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Just shut up.”
Eric smiled slightly and didn’t press further.
Over by the trees, Sabrina had reached Vanessa. She bent to gather the sobbing girl, but before her hands could make contact, Vanessa scrambled up and bolted toward the woods, crying as she ran.
With a sigh, Sabrina set off after her.
Once Clara was done with Eric, she noticed Scarlett’s quiet, tense expression.

After all, the child she’d just beaten up was Scarlett’s own daughter.

Around Eric, Clara was all fierce confidence. But under Scarlett’s gaze now, she felt suddenly
nervous.
She walked over, hooked a finger gently around Scarlett’s hand, and when Scarlett looked down, Clara shut her eyes and blurted, “Auntie, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. You can punish me if you want, but please don’t stay mad at me.”
Hearing that, Scarlett’s heart ached even more.
Why were children so different? Clara was so perceptive and brave, while Vanessa…
Then again, Vanessa was being raised by Sabrina now.
Scarlett knelt down and softly brushed Clara’s cheek. “You don’t need to apologize to me, sweetheart. Sometimes people who do wrong need to face consequences.”
Clara wrapped her arms around Scarlett’s leg. “Auntie, maybe you should go Damian can stay with me.”
check on Vanessa.
Scarlett shook her head gently. “Someone else is already with her. She doesn’t need me right
now.”
Thinking Scarlett was still upset, Clara held out her palm. “Then hit my hand, so you can feel better.”
Scarlett simply took Clara’s hand in hers, holding it without a word.
“Auntie,” Clara said quietly, “I don’t regret standing up for Eric.”
Scarlett looked into Clara’s determined eyes and managed a faint smile. “You did the right thing, Clara. Protecting your friends is important.”
The pain was still there, but Clara wasn’t wrong.
Damian stood nearby holding Eric’s hand, though his attention never truly left Scarlett.
On the surface she was composed, but he knew–she was hurting more than anyone.
He wanted to comfort her, but the memory of her calling him “tainted” still stung.
He hated how much it bothered him, but he couldn’t just turn it off.
Sensing Scarlett’s low spirits, Damian gave Eric a subtle nod toward her.

Eric understood. He walked over and hugged Scarlett gently. “Scarlett, let’s go make lunch together.”
Scarlett looked down at him, her eyes full of regret. “Eric… let me apologize for what Vanessa said to you. It was cruel and wrong.”
Eric shook his head. “It’s okay. I’m used to it. She’s not the first kid to say things like that. I’ve never had a mom.”
Hearing him say that so quietly broke Scarlett’s heart. She pulled him into a warm hug, stroking his hair. “You are a wonderful boy, Eric. Don’t let anyone make you feel less. Your dad loves you so much—even if you don’t have a mom, you are deeply loved.”
