Luke was slouched on the sofa, scrolling through videos on his phone.

Hearing footsteps, he looked up. When he saw it was Scarlett, he rolled his eyes and let out a mocking laugh. “It’s this late in the morning and you still haven’t even started breakfast. Really acting like you’re the lady of the house now, huh?”

Scarlett ignored him and moved toward the door.

But Luke wasn’t finished. “Some people just don’t know how to act when they get a taste of the good life.”

Scarlett stopped walking. She couldn’t let it slide. Turning to face him, her voice was icy. “When you talk like that, it only shows your own lack of class.”

Luke had never liked Scarlett. Seeing her talk back now, his temper flared. “Say that again!”

Scarlett smirked. “I’ll say it as many times as you need to hear it. You’re the one who doesn’t belong here.”

That was it for Luke. He tossed his phone aside and strode toward her. “You’re asking for it.”

As he closed in, he raised his hand as if to strike her.

Before his hand could descend, a deep voice rang out from the stairs. “Luke, enough!”

It was Vincent.

Hearing Vincent’s voice, Luke flinched and immediately lowered his arm.

Vincent was dressed in light gray sleepwear. He descended the stairs step by deliberate step.

Each footfall seemed to land heavily on Luke’s nerves.

When Vincent reached them, Luke mumbled, “Vincent.”

He hung his head, his voice rough and defensive, like a scolded child.

But Vincent wasn’t letting him off easy. Without warning, he delivered a sharp kick to the back

of Luke’s knee.

The force was enough to make Luke stumble, barely catching his balance.

Once he steadied himself, Vincent asked coldly, “Is that any way to speak to my wife?”

Luke kept his head down, grumbling discontentedly, “It’s just… she’s changed. She doesn’t cook or help around the house anymore. Someone had to say something.”

Vincent’s voice dropped lower. “And that someone is you?”

Luke hung his head, saying not a word.

Vincent pressed on, his voice sharp with accusation. “Is she a maid to the Stewart family?”

Luke shook his head. “No.”

“Then since when,” Vincent pressed, “is she required to cook or clean for you?”

Luke finally looked up at him. “But she used to do all that! She even made my favorite meals.”

Vincent’s anger flashed. He raised his voice above Luke’s. “Well, she doesn’t have to anymore. From now on, she doesn’t have to do a single thing she doesn’t want to.”

“You’re spoiling her, Vincent,” Luke muttered resentfully.

Vincent didn’t engage. Instead, he changed the subject. “Why are you at Ravenshade Villa this early?”

“I haven’t seen Vanessa in a while,” Luke replied. “Came by to visit her.”

“She’s upstairs,” Vincent said flatly. “If you’re here to see her, then go see her. Don’t stand down here making a scene.”

With a reluctant “Yeah, fine,” Luke headed upstairs.

From the moment Vincent had come downstairs, Scarlett had been watching him.

She saw him defend her–kicking Luke, speaking up for her.

Yet none of it stirred any warmth in her heart.

If anything, so he can stand up for me.

But what about all the times before?

He never did.

After Luke was gone, Vincent turned to Scarlett. “If he bothers you again, tell me. I won’t let him-”

Scarlett cut him off. “I need to get to work. I’m leaving now.”

Without another word, she turned and walked out.

Vincent watched her go, an uneasy feeling settling in his chest.

Upstairs, Luke went to Vanessa’s room first and found it empty.

After glancing into a couple of rooms, he found her in the guest bedroom.

Vanessa was already awake, lying on the large bed with a troubled expression.

Luke approached and playfully tickled her side.

Vanessa didn’t laugh. She just turned her head and said softly, “Uncle Luke.”

Luke pulled her into a sitting position and gently pinched her cheek. “What’s going on? You look kinda down.”

Vanessa wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face against him. “Nothing… I just don’t feel good.”

Luke sensed something was wrong, but he didn’t want to push her.

Still, he was sure Vanessa’s mood had something to do with Scarlett.

Internally, he cursed Scarlett again. That witch. If she’s upsetting Vanessa, she’s really going to regret
