Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash ` 343
Chapter 343
“Rebecca?
Are you listening?”
“Huh? Yeah, I’m listening.”
Rebecca seemed to snap out of it, but her tone was still a little
distracted.
“Um… Maddie, I think you might be overthinking it. Roderick
cares about you so much, if there was really something wrong
with his health, he would never hide it from you. It’s probably
just that work has been busy lately, and he’s under a lot of
stress.”
Madeleine frowned slightly. Rebecca was acting so strange
today.
“If it’s not his health, then what else could he be hiding from me,
unless…”
“Unless what?”
“Unless he’s cheating on me.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Madeleine herself was
stunned.
Her heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand,
and her breath caught in her throat.
Cheating?
She had never imagined Roderick would ever do something like
that to her.
His love for her needed no proof.
But…
People make mistakes.
Madeleine suddenly remembered that a few days ago, he’d
gone out for a work function and came back smelling of a
strange perfume.
Once the seed of doubt was planted, it began to sprout all sorts
of terrible possibilities.
Rebecca’s reaction on the other end of the line was extreme,
her voice shooting up. “Impossible! Absolutely not! Madeleine,
what are you even thinking!”
The extreme reaction only made Madeleine more suspicious.
Shouldn’t Rebecca be cursing Roderick out, or at least helping her analyze the possibility?
That kind of absolute denial sounded more like… she was
hiding something.
“Rebecca.”
Madeleine’s voice dropped. “Do you know something?”
“I… what could I possibly know?”
Rebecca’s tone was clearly panicked. “I just don’t think Roderick
is that kind of person. He would die for you, how could he
possibly cheat?
You’re really overthinking this.”
With that, Rebecca made an excuse, saying someone was there
to talk about work, and quickly hung up.
Clutching the warm phone, Madeleine felt her chest tighten.
A heavy sense of impending doom washed over her.
Over here, Rebecca hung up on Madeleine and immediately
called Roderick.
“Roderick!
Something terrible has happened. Madeleine thinks you’re
cheating on her!”
On the other end of the line, Roderick didn’t sound surprised. In
fact, he seemed to be in a good mood.
“What did she say?”
“She said you’ve been acting suspiciously lately. At first, she
was worried something was wrong with your health, but then
she thought about it and said the only other possibility is that
you’re cheating.”
Rebecca was frustrated.
“I’m the worst liar. No, seriously, can you just make sure she
doesn’t ask me about this?”
“What lie?”
Roderick raised an eyebrow. “I’m not cheating. You can just tell
her the truth.”
Rebecca rolled her eyes.
“Then why don’t you tell Madeleine that you’ve been talking
business with the woman who was chasing you relentlessly a few years ago?”
Roderick laughed on the other end of the line, a hint of
amusement in his voice:
“If I told her, what do you think she’d do, with her personality?”
Rebecca thought for a moment.
“She’d demand to know everything.”
“Exactly. If she knew what that woman did to her all those years
ago while chasing me, she’d probably charge over there with a
knife.”
Roderick raised an eyebrow, sounding like he enjoyed the idea
of Madeleine being so protective of him.
“She has a competition with Leona soon. I don’t want her to be
distracted right now.”
Rebecca listened without saying a word.
That woman’s name was Evelyn Cruz, a famous investment
queen in the business world, with countless assets and
resources.
A few years ago, she launched an aggressive pursuit of
Roderick, using every trick in the book. With her powerful family
background, even Roderick had to tread carefully around her
back then.
Back then, Roderick had stumbled quite a bit because of her.
Actually, Madeleine knew about all this back then, but her mind
was on Edward. She didn’t seem to care at all, which made
Roderick give up on himself, even thinking about shutting down
his company.
Then, for some unknown reason, Evelyn suddenly quieted down
and went abroad.
Now she’s made a comeback, appearing as a business partner.
It’s obvious her intentions are not what they seem.
“But.”
Rebecca still felt it was wrong. “If you keep hiding it like this,
wouldn’t it be worse if Madeleine finds out on her own one day?
That Evelyn woman is no pushover. What if she deliberately
does something…”
“That’s why I have to handle it myself.”
Roderick’s voice turned cold. “I’ll close this deal as soon as
possible so she has no reason to get close again. Until then, the
less Madeleine knows, the better.”
He paused, his tone firm and decisive. “You just need to make
her believe that in my eyes and in my heart, there has only ever
been her, Madeleine. Leave the rest to me.”
What else could Rebecca say?
She could only sigh helplessly. “Fine, fine, it’s between you
two… I’ll try my best to cover for you.
But Roderick, I’m telling you, if you let Maddie get hurt, I’ll be the
first one to come after you!”
After hanging up, Rebecca rubbed her temples, a headache
forming.
On one side was the sharp–witted Madeleine, and on the other,
the strategic but autocratic Roderick. Being the one in the know
felt like walking on thin ice.
“Oh God, why do these things always fall on me?”
She leaned back in her chair and, after a long while, finally took
out her phone.
Rebecca: [Professor Shaw, I’m hurt. I need some care.]
Adrian: [Hurt?
Physical or mental?】
Rebecca: 【What’s the difference?]
Adrian: 【If it’s physical, I’ll take you to the hospital. If it’s mental… then I’ll have to be the one to help you heal.】
Holding her phone, Rebecca couldn’t help but let out a laugh.
Where did he learn to be such a smooth talker?
ust because she had once muttered that Adrian was an old
fossil, he had gone off to “study up,” and now he was constantly
coming up with new lines.
And yet, Rebecca quite enjoyed that her lover was changing for
her.
Rebecca: 【Alright, I’ll give you a chance. Come pick me up
tonight~】
