Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash ` 334
“I, Fiona, no matter how much I like someone, have always been
proud, have always had my dignity!
I would restrain myself, I would think things through, I would
stay clear–headed!
I wouldn’t be like this… so pathetic, so out of control, knowingly jumping into a fire pit!”
Her voice grew louder, filled with a self–loathing despair.
“Why is it that when it comes to you, I revolve around you like
an idiot, begging for a scrap of your attention like a beggar?
This isn’t me at all.
I’m not supposed to be like this!”
“Just why…”
Just as Fiona completely lost control and was about to collapse
to the floor-
With a soft click, the door to the hospital room was pushed
open.
Chapter 334
Madeleine watched everything in the room with cold eyes and
said indifferently:
“Because we’re all just a means to an end.”
A strong sense of empathy and sorrow welled up in Madeleine as she looked at Fiona, who was usually so radiant but was now a complete mess, painfully questioning why she wasn’t herself
anymore.
She slowly walked into the room, her voice calm, yet it landed
like a heavy stone in a turbulent lake.
“Haven’t you realized yet? When you’re near Edward, all your emotions become involuntary, beyond your control.”
“Our only purpose is to serve as his backdrop.”
“The difference is, the person I originally loved was Roderick.
But you.”
She paused.
“Fiona, you’ve truly fallen in love with Edward.”
A deafening silence echoed in the hospital room.
Edward and Fiona froze, both staring in disbelief at Madeleine,
Chapter 334
who had appeared out of nowhere.
What did she just say?
It was like they couldn’t understand.
But her words were like a thread, stringing together all the
uncertain beads.
A means to an end, a foil…
It sounded too bizarre.
Fiona slowly turned her head, her gaze falling back on Edward.
Edward was just as shocked as she was.
Madeleine walked up to them, breaking the silence.
“I know this is hard to believe.”
She gave a bitter smile, opening her hand to look at her fingers.
“After all, admitting you’re actually a fictional character is no
different from hearing a ghost story, right?”
“Madeleine, what the hell are you talking about!”
Edward’s suppressed roar came out, his pupils trembling. He
Chapter 334
was clearly flustered.
Madeleine looked at Edward.
She knew that Edward, influenced by his plot armor, was
sometimes a bit overconfident.
But he was smart.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t be the main character.
So when he heard what she said, combined with his own
situation, he clearly understood what she meant.
“You already know what I’m talking about, don’t you?”
Madeleine’s voice was soft, but it struck Edward’s heart like a
heavy hammer.
She looked into Edward’s eyes, which were beginning to waver
violently, and continued her calm statement:
“Think about it. Hasn’t your journey been a little too smooth?
The things you seemed to get through your own ability and
charm–do they really hold up to scrutiny?”
“I gave everything I had to help you get started, Fiona invested
Chapter 334
in you against her family’s wishes, and all those countless
influential patrons who just happened to appear whenever you needed them…”
“Edward, do you really think all of this was just a coincidence, that you were just lucky and irresistibly charming?”
Edward’s face grew paler and paler. These words were the
same as what Roderick had said.
Madeleine then looked at Fiona, who was still in a state of
immense shock.
“Your feelings for Edward, when did they start?
Weren’t they abnormally intense?
Even though you knew it was inappropriate and wouldn’t work
out, you couldn’t stop yourself from being drawn to him, even
willing to lower your standards again and again?”
Fiona clapped a hand over her mouth, tears welling up again.
Yes, those feelings had come on too abruptly, too intensely, too
unlike anything Fiona would normally feel.
She had always thought she was just deeply in love, but
Chapter 334
thinking back now, it felt more like… a predetermined program.
“We…” Fiona’s voice trembled. “Our consciousness and
feelings… could they all be manipulated?”
“At least part of them are.”
Madeleine confirmed her suspicion, her gaze shifting back to
Edward. It held a complex mix of emotions–some sympathy,
but more calm scrutiny.
“And you, Edward, you are the absolute center of this story.
All the good luck and appeal might just be to ensure that you,
the main character, follow the established script toward a so-
called successful and perfect ending.”
“No… impossible!”
Edward finally found his voice, growling hoarsely as he tried to
mask his inner panic with anger, “I’m not some main character,
and I don’t have a script.”
“Is that so?”
