Elaine appeared extremely pale and visibly shaken. “Oh, I’m fine; I just have a bit of a headache. The doctor checked on me and said I’m okay. It’s just that your father… the truck hit his side…” she said, her voice trembling.
In that moment, she let out a loud wail.
The thought that her husband might become permanently quadriplegic hit her like a ton of bricks.
After a comprehensive investigation, Charlie learned that the muck truck had fled the scene following the accident. Both Elaine and Jacob had lost consciousness from the impact, leaving them unable to capture the truck’s license plate or any distinguishing features.
Fortunately, Good Samaritans transported them to the hospital.
Elaine’s condition was somewhat better; she had been seated in the front passenger seat during the collision. Although she was also unconscious after the accident, she only sustained some bruises and minor injuries. She regained consciousness upon reaching the hospital.
Jacob, however, was less fortunate. Being in the driver’s seat, he endured the brunt of the impact, resulting in his unfortunate state.
Charlie sighed heavily, reflecting, “God is so unfair.”
While Jacob could be an arrogant braggart who pretended to know more than he actually did, he wasn’t inherently a bad person. He was merely a bit cowardly and foolish. Yet, this accident had left him facing the prospect of permanent quadriplegia. If something didn’t change soon, he would face a lifetime of misery.
In stark contrast, Elaine embodied both snobbery and a manipulative nature, intent on marrying her daughter off for wealth and prestige, devoid of any moral compass.
And yet, here she was—unscathed!
Charlie couldn’t help but feel a twinge of malice. Why wasn’t Elaine the one lying in that hospital bed, facing the risk of quadriplegia?
If she were disabled, perhaps he could finally enjoy a peaceful life within the Wilson family…
Just then, the ICU door swung open, and two figures entered.
Charlie’s expression darkened upon seeing the young man at the front—Jason Grant, the very person he had humiliated at the auto show the day before.
Following Jason was a middle-aged man carrying a medicine chest adorned with a large red cross.
Claire asked, “Mom, why is he here?”
“Oh, I invited him. Jason knows the hospital director. He happened to be visiting relatives when we arrived, and upon seeing our situation, he immediately arranged for your dad to be placed in the ICU,” Elaine explained.
She then turned to Jason with a warm smile. “You must be exhausted from all the arrangements. Please, take a seat!”
Jason forced a smile in return. “It’s alright; I’m not tired.”
However, his expression shifted abruptly when he noticed Charlie standing behind Elaine.
The sight of this pathetic loser only fueled his disdain.
It was Charlie’s meddling at the auto show that had led to Jason’s humiliation in front of Claire, and that resentment had festered deeply within him.
Seeing his rival in front of him ignited a burning fury, and at the same time, he felt compelled to redeem himself in Claire’s eyes.
Elaine, with a heavy heart and tears still in her eyes, said to Jason, “The doctor just told me that Jacob might be paralyzed for life. What am I going to do…?”
Jason pointed to the middle-aged man behind him, introducing him to Elaine. “Don’t worry! This is Joshua Lynch, a renowned Chinese medicine doctor in the country. I’ve invited him to treat Uncle Jacob! With his expertise, Uncle Jacob will heal before you know it!”
