We Built a Kingdom From Ashes That Still Remembered Love by Aila Frost 883

Chapter 883

Judy’s POV

The ride back to the villa was quiet. Nan and I sat in the backseat, and Erik drove. The others went home in their own vehicles, and I had no idea where Irene went. She didn’t go with us, and she won’t answer her phone. She disappeared almost immediately after Erik showed up.

Erik hadn’t said a word since we left the packhouse. His grip was turning white on the steering wheel. I knew he was hurting because of Irene’s brush-off, and I felt bad for him.

“I’m just going to call Chester really quick,” Nan said as she took out her cellphone.

I probably should have suggested taking her home instead of making her come to the villa with me; she hadn’t seen Chester or her daughter all day. But honestly, I really didn’t want to be alone right now. I needed to work through whatever was happening, and I needed my best friend to do it with me.

As Nan spoke to Chester on the phone, I leaned forward in my seat, bringing me a bit closer to Erik.

“How are you doing?” I asked him.

He glanced at me through the rear-view mirror.

“How do you think I’m doing?” He asked, narrowing his eyes. I’ve never seen him look this agitated before, and it made my chest tighten. “My mate wants nothing to do with me.”

“She doesn’t know she’s your mate,” I told him. “Once that curse Chuck put on her is broken, she will be yours.’

He let out a breath.

“If that curse ever gets broken,” he muttered. “Seems like it’s getting worse!

My brows pinched together.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

He was quiet for a moment, and at first, I didn’t think he was going to say anything.

“I went to see her the other day. I thought maybe we could talk now that she’s had some time to process everything. But I think I just made things worse between us. She started to cry and told me to stay away from her. She said the only person she will ever love is her fated mate, Chuck. A couple of weeks ago, she said she hated him and never wanted to see him again… and now she says she still loves him and will only love him. I just don’t get it. I don’t think the curse is any closer to being broken than when he cast it.”

blinked, confused. Irene rarely talks about Chuck. When we found out he was cheating a few weeks ago, she was devastated and wanted nothing to do with Chuck after that. I knew it would be difficult for her to go no contact with him entirely, but I didn’t think the distance would make her love him even more.

That’s not how this was supposed to work.

Then, I thought about what Esme said about knowing how to break the curse. The only problem was that we needed Chuck to return to the place he cast the spell… the mansion in the Silver Crescent Pack.

I was also going to need Cora’s help because there was no way I could do this on my own.

“I think I might be able to break the curse on Irene,” I told him without much more thought.

He glanced at me through the mirror again, his eyes suddenly a little wider.

“What are you talking about?”

“Esme knows how I can break the siren’s curse, but I’m going to need Chuck to come to the Silver Crescent pack.”

“Hold on a second, Chester,” Nan said into the phone before turning her attention to me. “What do you mean you’re going to need Chuck to come here? That’s the last thing Irene needs.”

I definitely agreed, but I wasn’t seeing any other way.

“It’s the only way to break the curse,” I told her.

“How do we know that?” She asked, raising her brows.

“Because Esme told me that,” I replied.

“And we trust Esme? The woman who couldn’t talk for years and now can’t seem to shut up?”

Something surged inside of me.

“Yes,” I said without hesitation, and the moment that word left my lips, I realized it was true. I did trust Esme, and I’m not sure how I know this, but it seemed like the magic inside of me trusts her as well. “I need to get Chuck and bring him here,” I said as my final thought. “It’s the only way.”

Nan sighed.

“And how do you expect to bring him here?” Nan asked. “He’s in Alpha Jeremy’s territory. We can’t exactly go there and retrieve him.”

“Or maybe we can,” I said, glancing back at Erik. “It would require another trip with a completely new plan.”

“Alpha Gavin would never let you near that pack without him,” Erik warned me.

“He’s right. You’re going through a very delicate pregnancy, and taking a trip like this could be dangerous for you and the baby,” Nan said, a worried look in her eyes.

“Do you hear yourselves?” I asked, staring between the two of them. We were almost at the villa, and I wasn’t even close to being done with this conversation yet. “This is Irene we are talking about. If I can help her, why wouldn’t I take that chance?”

“Because going to another Lycan Chairman’s territory and starting anything with any of his packmates, especially one of his Gammas, is grounds for a war. It’s a dangerous plan, Judy, and I think we should regroup and think of another plan instead,” Nan said.
