Gavin cupped my face, forcing my eyes to meet his. Warmth spread across his fingers and seeped into my flesh, giving me a warm feeling all the way throughout my body, right down to the tip of my toes.
“You don’t have to prove to anyone that you’ll be a good Luna,” he murmured. “You are already fantastic, and I’m so proud of you. I’ll talk to Olivia. You don’t need to worry about this kind of thing. Let me handle it.”
“No,” I said quickly. “I can handle it… Honestly, it’s not that big of a deal, and I really want to be able to prove myself.”
He searched my face for a moment longer before he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine.
“I love you,” he murmured.
“I love you too.”
Not long after, Eliza and Taylor rejoined us outside, Eliza with a small bag. She smiled at me and then turned to her mate to say her goodbyes to him.
“We’ll be back before sunrise,” Gavin told them. “But it’s important.”
Eliza nodded with understanding in her eyes.
“I figured you wouldn’t pull me away if it weren’t important,” she told him.
Once we were all in the car and Gavin had pulled the car onto the road, we filled Eliza in on everything that had happened. I even told Gavin the entire story about my conversation with Levi, and though he doesn’t trust Levi, he doesn’t think he would lie about something like this, so we had no other choice but to believe him.
My heart was racing in my chest because I wasn’t sure what to expect. If I didn’t already know that the Blackwells were my actual birth family, I would think that I was about to meet my mom for the first time. This was a woman whom I fully believed was my mother for most of my life, even though I had never met her.
Gavin reached over and touched my hand. I flipped my hand over so he could intertwine his fingers through mine, and then he gave my hand a gentle squeeze. I felt warmth all over my body, and I couldn’t help but look up at him as he drove.
At some point, I must have fallen asleep because I woke to Gavin peppering small kisses along the nape of my neck. I opened my eyes, groggily, and looked around. It was still dark outside, and when I looked at the time, it read just after 11 pm. I crinkled my nose and stared around the parking lot we were sitting in.
“Where are we?” I asked.
“We stopped at the gas station,” he told me, motioning with his head towards the little store. “Eliza needed to use the restroom. We’ll be in Yellowstone in about 20 minutes.”
I nodded and leaned into him, loving his proximity.
“This is going to work, right?” I asked, sitting down at my hands. “My magic, I mean? I’ll be able to control it eventually?”
I wasn’t sure why I was asking him these questions because I knew he didn’t know the answer, but the way he answered left me with no doubt in my mind that I’ll be able to figure this out in due time.
“Yes,” he said, his voice full of conviction. “There’s nothing you can’t do, Judy.”
We kissed a few times, letting our lips glide along with one another and breathing the same air, grounding our

wolves and our bodies. We pulled apart when Eliza rejoined us in the backseat of the car, and then we were on the road again.
Within 20 minutes, we were pulling into the hospital in Yellowstone. We walked into the hospital as if we owned the place; those who were seated in the waiting room turned to look at us, probably sensing Gavin’s powerful aura.
Some bowed at the sight of the powerful Lycan chairpersons, and Gavin didn’t seem to take much notice of them. He went straight to the Nurses’ station and told her that he was there to see Megan Churchill.
Usually, it was after visiting hours, and anyone else would be declined. Still, Gavin wasn’t just anyone… he was the most powerful Lycan Chairman and had a reputation, even in Neutral territories. 1
She gave Gavin Meg’s room number and told him it was on the third floor. He took hold of my hand and guided me down the hallway until we reached the elevators.
“She’s been in a coma for 23 years,” Eliza said, hugging her bag to the side of her body with one arm. “You should prepare yourself for what you’re about to see.
I swallowed the lump in my throat but nodded.
The elevator door opened, and we stepped out; I followed Gavin down the long hallway until we reached the door that read “Megan Churchill.”
This was it… We were about to see Meg in the flesh for the first time.
I couldn’t help but worry about what we were about to see.
