Chapter 978
“Aren’t you and Jack the reason Mom and Dad asked for such a large sum of money? No family expects that much for a wedding gift. How would you feel if your children’s in-laws demanded a similar amount for their wedding?”
“That money would be crucial for me to start a family with Hank. How could I let Hank give it away? It’s merely a formality, but what did you tell Mom and Dad? You claimed that $777,777 is lucky for you, yet all I receive in return is $7,000—nothing more.”
“Mom and Dad will receive $100,000, while you and Jack each get $300,000. Why is it that they are selling their daughter to provide for their sons? What about their daughter?”
Confronted by her sister’s questions, Oscar flushed with anger and replied, “You’re siding with outsiders over family. We’re your brothers. You should be getting more from the Browns since they are wealthy, but now you can’t get anything because you’re married.”
“You went behind our backs and married Hank. Look, the $777,777 gift has now dwindled to $70,000. What’s wrong with helping me and Jack when you’re living a comfortable life in the city? It’s normal for siblings to support one another.”
“Just because I’m your sister doesn’t mean I owe you anything. Why should I provide help when my own situation isn’t great? Why should I fund your home renovations? As it stands, I don’t even know if I have a bedroom, let alone a home, with Hank. Why should I suffer while you enjoy your life?”
“We’re all children of Mom and Dad. Yes, I owe them my life, and I’m not saying I won’t help them financially. You could contribute something to our parents as well. Like you, I can assist with their medical bills if they become ill.”
“I don’t owe you or Jack anything.”
“Do whatever you want! You’re not really part of the family anymore since you’re taking Hank’s last name. I don’t have time for you.” Unable to win the argument, Oscar grimaced as he opened the car door and walked away.
Jessica was furious as well.
With thoughts of the five thousand dollars in her mind, she flung open the car door and shouted at her brother’s retreating figure, “Give me back the five thousand dollars, Oscar!”
He better return the money since he wasn’t following her requests.
Oscar took off running, convinced he would never have to pay her back.
He thought there was little chance she would make a scene over five thousand dollars.
Jessica, however, was not willing to let her brother’s actions ruin their relationship over a small amount of money. In fact, she wished their argument hadn’t escalated. How did it get so out of hand?
Despite everything, she felt let down by her family every time she reflected on the situation.
Jessica saw no issue with requesting a little extra financial support. She believed that if she married into the family without gaining anything in return, Hank would not truly value her.
