Chapter 973
Plopping herself into Zachary’s embrace, Serenity yawned and said, “I forgot to discuss something with you.”
“What is it?”
Zachary took everything his wife said seriously, no matter how trivial it might seem.
“My money-hungry relatives are planning a switch. They want my cousin to undergo surgery to look like me and take my place as Mrs. York.”
Zachary scowled.
“My cousin is the same age as I am. Our fathers somewhat resemble each other, and we both take after them. I suppose you could say we have a similar appearance. At least, that’s what people used to say when we were kids. I haven’t seen her in over a decade since my parents passed away, so I have no idea what she looks like now.”
Zachary frowned and said, “These people are delusional. Seren, is my father-in-law really your grandparents’ son?”
“That’s not the main point when you have parents who have favorites. Sometimes, a biological child can receive less attention than an adopted one.”
“Harriet must be planning to get plastic surgery, but I don’t know where it will happen. Can you investigate and stop her from turning into me? I found out from Noah after your bodyguards caught him stalking and photographing me.”
Noah wasn’t honest with Serenity; he only mentioned that the photos were for Harriet so she could imitate Serenity’s mannerisms.
It was easy to infer that the Hunts were trying to groom Harriet to pretend to be Serenity.
Serenity and the Hunts were far beyond reconciliation. Now that Serenity was Mrs. York, the Hunts resented her for not letting them benefit from her success. Furthermore, Serenity was responsible for their significant financial losses.
The plan to have Harriet replace Serenity was aimed at getting someone close to her.
the bars. We need to protect ourselves while also keeping an eye on Serenity and Zachary.”
Zachary quickly called Josh, appointing him to oversee the situation. Serenity watched him intently as he ended the call. With a glimmer in his dark eyes, Zachary said softly, “I’ve got your back, Seren. I won’t allow them to get away with this.”
“Josh has a point,” he continued. “They’ll harbor a grudge for losing everything they valued and will only seek revenge when cornered. Now that they have nothing to lose, they’re likely to act recklessly.”
“They’re simply a nuisance,” Serenity commented. Gently, she stroked Zachary’s face. “Zachary, I want—”
He leaned in closer, lifting her chin and narrowing his eyes as he leaned in for a kiss. Serenity smiled and met his lips, enjoying the moment.
After several heated kisses and shared breaths, Zachary whispered something softly in her ear. Although Serenity didn’t catch his words, his desires were unmistakable. He was excited, but given her time of the month, he would have to manage his urges.
“Zachary, I’m not upset about you secretly placing security around me,” she reassured him.
Zachary kissed her again, explaining, “They’re not here to spy on you. I’m just concerned for your safety. You’re my wife, and now that your identity is public, there are many who may want to harm you. You can’t stay cooped up at home forever. This is necessary for your protection.”
He would rather die than admit he wanted to monitor her every move.
“I see your perspective. Without the bodyguards, we wouldn’t have known what the Hunts were planning. We need more eyes on them. At least we’ll have proof when they become desperate and resort to crime. They won’t leave us alone until they’re imprisoned.”
“bars.”
Zachary was a formidable man; however, unlike the lawless heroes found in books, he had principles and knew where to draw the line.
Serenity did not want her partner to violate the law because of these despicable individuals.
