“You think you’re all that?!”
“Alright, alright. I guess I do think I’m all that. I’ll get them to give me everything I need to keep thinking so,” he replied.
Serenity was left speechless.
“Seren.”
Zachary stood up and moved to sit beside his wife. He squeezed himself into the armchair with her, and despite her attempts to shove him away in frustration, he remained firmly in place, taking up most of the seat.
The tight squeeze made her want to stand up and leave, but he wrapped his arms around her waist. With a show of strength, she suddenly tumbled into his lap. He pulled her close, resting his chin on her shoulder, and softly asked, “Seren, will you please forgive me?”
“The days I couldn’t search for you were incredibly difficult. I felt like a zombie.”
Even though he could track her movements at any moment, he still missed her desperately.
“I promise I won’t lie to you again. If I do, I’ll accept any consequences you throw my way.”
Serenity tried to pry his hands off her, but after failing, she pinched the back of his hand a few times with force. With a stiff expression, she said, “I never said you couldn’t come looking for me.”
“Nana wouldn’t let me.”
Zachary added with a pitiful tone, “One night, I got drunk, and do you know how Nana woke me up?”
“She poured a bucket of cold water over your head.”
“No, she had someone set up a deck chair by the pool and laid me on it. When I rolled over, I fell into the pool. It shocked me awake instantly—partly from the cold.”
Serenity was left speechless.
Only Nana would do something like that.
“Once I sobered up, Nana wouldn’t let me go find you. She insisted that I let you calm down. Only God knows how hard it was for me to go days without seeing you.”
I only immerse myself in my work. When I’m busy, I don’t miss you as much… I truly didn’t mean to evoke your pity.
“I know I made you lose trust in me, and I deeply regret it. I want to prove myself through my actions and help you trust me again. I promise I won’t even consider deceiving you again.”
“Seren, I’ve thought this through. You can pursue whatever you want, and I’ll support you unconditionally. If you feel out of place in my world, you don’t have to force yourself. I’ll adapt to you instead; it’s much easier than expecting you to adapt to me.”
“I believe a simple life, where we live on our own terms, is quite good.”
Serenity turned to face him.
Their eyes locked.
In the next instant, Serenity grabbed Zachary’s face and fiercely bit his lip, then proceeded to bite each of his cheeks as well.
