With Duncan’s assistance, Serenity successfully loaded her shopping haul into her car, filling it to the brim.
“Thank you, Mr. Lewis,”
Serenity said, expressing her gratitude.
Duncan smiled and responded, “I’m not just business partners with Mr. Lewis; we are friends as well, and quite close. Since you are his wife, it’s only natural for me to help.”
He then turned to Sonny and added, “Although Sonny doesn’t like me and is a bit scared, I can’t help but want to play with him every time.”
Duncan found it amusing, even as Sonny buried himself in his mother’s embrace, scared to tears.
Sonny likely felt that Mr. Lewis was treating him like a pet monkey.
“We need to go, Mr. Lewis,”
Liberty said as she carried her son to her sister’s car and said goodbye to Duncan.
“Goodbye,” Duncan replied, striding toward his car parked by the roadside after Serenity started the engine.
Once they left, Jessica nudged the frowning man beside her. Noticing Hank’s scowl, she remarked, “What’s wrong? Are you upset that a man was all over your ex-wife?”
“Hank, you and Liberty are separated! She’s no longer your wife. Why the long face?”
Regaining his composure, Hank wanted to explain himself, but he knew he was indeed frowning. There was no excuse for it. Finally, he said, “Jessica, I suppose it’s a common trait among men. They don’t mind finding new love after a divorce, but their egos take a hit if their ex-wives are moving on.”
“In other words, men don’t want their ex-wives to fare better,”
she observed, relaxing her tense features. “That man must be wealthy. I saw his car; it was a Porsche.”

He built his company from the ground up without any financial assistance from his family, and now he’s worth billions—definitely wealthy. Mr. Lewis supported Liberty when my mom and sister approached Liberty to collect the money her grandfather owed.
“Didn’t you see him at the police station?”
Jessica responded, “I was focused on Mrs. Stone and her daughter.” She didn’t get a good look at Duncan, as she was too shocked to learn that Mrs. Stone was Liberty’s aunt to notice him.
“Hank, I think Mr. Lewis has a soft spot for Sonny. Will he gradually develop feelings for Liberty because he’s taken a liking to Sonny?” Like Hank, Jessica didn’t wish Liberty a happy ending. While loading their belongings into the car, Hank mocked, “Do you really think Liberty has the looks to impress Mr. Lewis? He’ll be thirty-six next year and has likely encountered many beautiful women, yet he remains single. That must mean he’s very selective when it comes to women.”

Hank got into the car, fastened his seatbelt, and remarked, “I can see Serenity marrying into a rich and influential family. She’s young and attractive. Even though she can fight and isn’t afraid to throw punches when she’s angry, she possesses a natural grace about her.”
“Liberty, on the other hand… Ha! I doubt she’s good enough. A man of power and wealth like Mr. Lewis would never be interested in her.”
Jessica replied, “Haven’t you noticed that Liberty has lost weight? Mr. Lewis might develop feelings for her now that she’s slimmed down and dressed up a bit. Some men are attracted to young divorcees.”
