Chapter 612
Noticing that Mrs. Lane was busy mopping the floor, Serenity paid it no mind and went off on her own.
Mrs. Lane accompanied her to the door and watched her step into the elevator before heading back inside. She quickly grabbed her cell phone to call Zachary.
At first, he didn’t answer.
Mrs. Lane tried calling him three more times, but he still didn’t pick up.
She then sent him a message.
[Mr. Zachary, the missus took some medicine.]
Within a minute, Zachary called Mrs. Lane back.
“What medicine did Serenity take?”
Though Zachary’s voice remained low and cold as usual, Mrs. Lane, familiar with him, could detect a hint of nervousness.
“She mentioned she hadn’t slept well and had a headache and sore eyes, so she took a painkiller.”
Zachary abruptly fell silent.
He was struck with fear!
Mrs. Lane’s vague response led him to worry that Serenity had taken pills with the intent to harm herself.
However, he quickly realized he was mistaken.
Serenity had a vibrant personality; there was no way she would consider suicide, especially over him. He was being overly self-critical.
Deep down, he felt less worthy than someone like Jasmine, whom he viewed as an outsider.
“Mr. Zachary, the missus shared everything with me during breakfast,” Mrs. Lane continued.
She sighed. “You need to understand what it is you truly like about her. What draws you to her? Don’t try to mold her into what you want. If you change her, will she still be the same person you fell for?”
“She doesn’t confide in me. Even Duncan knows things I don’t.”
“Have you opened up to her about yourself? Remember, you’re still hiding your identity from her. You keep many things from her.”
Zachary’s
Her expression darkened. “Whose side are you on, Mrs. Lane?”
“I’m on your side, of course. It’s because I care about your happiness that I’m saying all this. Why else would I bother? I’m just a servant.”
“We all respect you, Mrs. Lane.”
Zachary was aloof and domineering, yet he treated his servants with politeness and respect.
“Old Mrs. York just left, and you’re arguing with the missus again. She mentioned sending you a message, but you didn’t respond. Are you starting a cold war with her again?”
Zachary remained silent; he simply didn’t feel like replying to messages when he was in a bad mood.
“Stop focusing on wanting to change the missus. Often, it’s you who needs to adapt for her.”
“Is she still angry?”
Mrs. Lane fell silent.
Serenity was lighthearted and no longer upset.
Zachary’s temper flared again. “She’s not angry, is she? She still eats and sleeps well. I’m the only one who’s furious. I drank two cups of coffee and worked all night.”
Mrs. Lane was left speechless.
‘The missus is right. Mr. Zachary is indeed short-tempered.’
She sighed.
The bond between this couple was still not deep enough.
This was the consequence of a marriage of convenience. While other newlyweds enjoyed their honeymoon phase, Serenity and Zachary were still getting to know each other.
“I’m busy, Mrs. Lane. Please don’t interrupt my work unless it’s urgent.”
Zachary ended the conversation abruptly.
