Chapter 521
Liberty nodded and replied, “I took a few days off because Sonny was scared, so I wanted to stay with him.” “Then why are you here? Where’s your son?”
Liberty was at a loss for words.
Should she tell the truth?
Duncan glanced around but didn’t spot the strong, clever little boy.
However, the boy was frightened of him. Each time he saw Duncan, he would burrow into Liberty’s arms as if Duncan were a monster.
“Sonny is napping at home. Mrs. Lane is watching him, so I came out to run some errands.”
Duncan hummed and inquired, “What kind of errands?”
When Liberty hesitated to respond, he chuckled and said, “If you can’t share, then never mind. I was just curious since I happened to see you passing by and remembered you took leave.”
“Well, go ahead with your business. I’ll be on my way now.”
Duncan withdrew his large hand from Liberty’s bike, turned around, and walked away.
“Take care, Mr. Lewis,” Liberty called out.
Duncan didn’t look back but waved his hand in farewell.
The two parted ways.
Inside the hotel, Serenity engaged in a lengthy conversation with Audrey and Elisa. They only left when Darrell called for them.
Serenity saw them off at the hotel entrance before turning to walk toward her car. However, as she did, she noticed a group of people exiting the hotel. Among them were two familiar faces: Zachary and her brother-in-law, Callum. She thought she recognized another person but couldn’t recall where. The last time she saw him was at Beans and Cream with Zachary. They must be here to socialize with clients since there were several unfamiliar faces in the group.
Before them stood several tall men dressed in black. Were they bodyguards, or were they employees of York Corporation? At first, Zachary didn’t see his wife, but his bodyguards did. They were tasked with clearing the path for him and routinely scanned their surroundings for any suspicious individuals as they exited. Soon, they spotted Mrs. standing not far away, gazing directly at Zachary.
The group of bodyguards felt an overwhelming sense of dread. They all instinctively thought, “Oh no!” Mrs. was looking right at them, and Zachary’s identity was at risk of being revealed.
“Mr. Zachary, it’s Mrs.,” Jim, the quickest to react, promptly informed Zachary before turning to retreat back into the hotel. He needed to hide; Mrs. would remember his face. In her eyes, he was merely a substitute driver. If he stayed near Zachary, she might realize he was lying.
Meanwhile, Callum, Zachary, and Josh overheard Jim’s warning, but their clients couldn’t catch it clearly. Upon spotting his sister-in-law, Callum silently cursed, “Zachary said we wouldn’t run into her, yet here we are! We really shouldn’t make absolute statements; otherwise, we’ll just jinx ourselves.”
Josh halted and intentionally let Zachary walk ahead. He distanced himself slightly, wary of getting caught in the impending chaos. Zachary, however, remained the calmest of the group, likely because Audrey and Elisa were not present.
