She didn’t have much of a childhood to recall. The only memories she had were of her previous adoptive parents who often scolded and beat her, prompting her escape from a life she could no longer endure.
“She managed to escape when she was only seven or eight years old. With no means to provide for herself, she collapsed from hunger by the roadside until my grandparents found her and adopted her. After that, she lived a stable life, eventually meeting my father, marrying him, and giving birth to us. Both of my parents knew how to make money, and our family’s situation gradually improved, but…”
She paused, leaving the thought unfinished.
Zachary was aware of her story.
“Mrs. Stone still remembers her sister, and the family is investing significant resources in the search for her. They have never given up hope. Although her sister may have faced hardships, she is luckier than my mother in one significant way: at least someone in her family is still looking for her.”
“My mom doesn’t recall having any family. Her childhood was marked by constant upheaval, with frequent beatings, scoldings, and hunger. At one point, she suffered a serious illness that caused her to forget everything before the age of seven or eight.”
Zachary grasped her hand tightly, his voice steady. “Your mother didn’t have relatives searching for her. Either they are gone, or she was abandoned. During that time, many people did not want to have daughters and would discard them.”
Serenity contemplated his words and responded, “That makes sense. If my mom was abandoned, there would be no reason to search for her relatives, even if they were alive.”
As she spoke about her deceased mother, her mood darkened. “Zachary, I want to return and pay my respects to my parents. The Hunt family hasn’t allowed us to visit my parents’ graves since they forced my sister and me out of town. They warned us that if we tried to visit secretly, they would destroy my mother’s grave.”
“They have even moved my parents’ graves, so…”
“I don’t even know where they are buried now.” Serenity hesitated to reconcile with her dreadful relatives back home, primarily because they had crossed too many lines. It was her parents’ graves, but they were no longer allowed to visit. When they were younger, the sisters had been unable to resist, but now that they were adults, the Hunt family had relocated the graves without informing them, making it impossible for the sisters to visit, even if they wished to.
Despite their past transgressions, the family was now trying to make amends with her. However, Serenity found it hard to forgive them.
Zachary paused in his tracks. Serenity stopped as well. The couple exchanged glances. Zachary grasped her shoulders and promised earnestly, “Serenity, I will ensure that you and your sister can visit your parents’ graves one day. You will also reclaim the house your parents left behind.”
