“After spending half an hour in the house, the most I came away with was a business card.”
Elisa chuckled. “That sounds about right. Everyone is here for profit. Who would care about you if there was nothing to gain? What would you like to eat? I’ll grab something for you.”
“I saw some delicate pastries earlier. They looked delicious. Please bring some for me. I had a little to eat at the store, so I’m not too hungry.”
Serenity had a sweet tooth and was eager to try the exquisite snacks.
In the past, when she accompanied Jasmine and Aunt Rachel to parties, Jasmine and Serenity would often hide in a corner to eat and drink. Serenity particularly loved the pastries, which were always far superior to those from stores.
“Sure thing.”
Elisa set her glass of red wine on the small table in front of her and stood up to help Serenity get some food.
A short while later, she returned empty-handed, but two maids from the Dowlings followed her. The maids carried trays with the food that Elisa had selected for both Serenity and herself.
“Please leave them here, thank you.”
The maids placed the trays down, excused themselves, and turned to serve the other guests.
The two cousins settled into a corner, eating and drinking. No one dared to disturb them, largely because Elisa had a fiery temper. She showed no respect to those she looked down upon, and no one wanted to risk embarrassment at an event like this.
“Seren.”
Elisa suddenly nudged Serenity and motioned for her to look at a girl standing in another corner. The girl retrieved a small packet from her delicate purse and poured its contents into her glass of wine. Then, she turned and blended back into the crowd as if nothing had occurred.
She remained unaware of Elisa and Serenity’s presence the entire time, oblivious to the fact that her actions were being observed.
“What did she add to the drink?”
Elisa replied, “It’s probably some sort of drug. It’ll dissolve in the wine, and its taste will be masked, making it undetectable to whoever drinks it. I wonder who her target is; she must be trying to provoke the Dowlings by doing something like this at Ms. Dowling’s birthday party.”
“I think we encountered her when we first arrived. Her last name is Newman, right?”
“I can’t recall. I don’t pay attention to people like that. I only came tonight to keep you company; otherwise, my mom and I wouldn’t have attended.”
She was doing it all for Serenity.
Serenity chuckled. “I’ll knit you some little animals when I have the time. Which ones do you want? I’ll gift them to you.”
“I want all of the twelve zodiac signs.”
“Sure. Just give me some time, and I’ll send them to you once I’m finished. But please don’t flaunt them. Zachary can be petty and will get jealous.”
Zachary was naturally prone to jealousy.
Elisa laughed. “Just be content with what you have. You don’t know how many people wish they could see his domineering side.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m satisfied with what I have now.”
“I wonder who Ms. Newman will give that cup of wine to.”
