After a while, James’s hoarse voice asked, “Why… are there men’s voices where you are?”
I chuckled. “What’s it to you?”
“It is! Of course it is!”
In all our years, it was the first time I’d heard James so unraveled.
He growled low and angry, “We’re not divorced! I didn’t sign! I don’t want to lose you!”
“Why aren’t you checking on me anymore? Why aren’t you jealous?”
“Luna, come back. I miss you. So, so much.”
“Too late,” I cut off his outpouring, my voice soft. “I don’t love you anymore.”
Muffled sobs came through the phone.
I ignored them, hung up, and contacted my lawyer.
Since leaving that suffocating relationship, my mind had become frighteningly clear.
If an amicable divorce wasn’t possible, then legal proceedings it was.
No matter what, I wouldn’t entangle myself with James any longer.
After the dinner, I hadn’t drunk a drop, but Henry was completely wasted.
Colleagues teased me into taking Henry home.
One female colleague even winked at me, curiosity written all over her face: “Who was on the phone earlier? Another suitor? Then Henry didn’t drink all that for nothing!”
