Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 485
Chapter 485
Sapphira’s cheeks were as red as ripe apples. “He told me he didn’t want the prize money” she said shyly. “He said that if I won, all he wanted was for me to be his girlfriend.”
Larissa’s jaw dropped. “What? Dad was that direct? Any other girl would have thought he was a total creep for saying something like that!”
Sapphira nodded gently. “Yes… I’ll admit, his proposal caught me completely off guard.”
“So, did you turn him down right then and there?” Larissa pressed.
A flicker of embarrassment crossed Sapphira’s face. “No… I didn’t. To be honest, I already had a little crush on him. Even with his terrible clothes, I could see he was incredibly handsome. I knew that with just a little effort, he could easily be the campus heartthrob.”
“Aha! So you’re just as shallow as I am, Mom!” Larissa declared.
Sapphira didn’t deny it. “If you have the choice, why not date someone good–looking?”
A thought suddenly struck Larissa. “Wait a minute… for him to make a demand like that, doesn’t that mean he must have had his eye on you for a while?”
“After we were married, I asked him about it. He admitted he’d noticed me long before and already had feelings for me. He just never imagined I’d be the one to approach him,” Sapphira said, growing more flustered. She fidgeted with the clothes she’d so carefully selected for Larissa, nearly wrinkling the perfectly pressed fabrics.
Oh, my God.
It was almost too sweet to handle. Larissa felt like she was turning into the number one fan of her parents‘ love story.
Sapphira went on, “Since I’d entered the competition, I was determined to win first place… but if I won, I’d have to become his girlfriend.”
“So by agreeing, you were basically telling him you liked him too,” Larissa finished, a sly grin spreading across her face. “You were both heading for each other all along.”
Her romantic heart was about to burst. She’d never been one for sappy love stories. Her feelings for Haskell had started with his looks and deepened into a craving for his body. But compared to her parents‘ story, her own romance felt a little lackluster.
Sapphira smiled, lost in the memory. “I even asked him later, ‘What if I had lost the competition?”
“What did he say?” Larissa asked, her eyes wide with anticipation.
Sapphira laughed. “He said that as long as I agreed, he wouldn’t let me lose. First, he trusted my taste and my skills. And second, he trusted his own good looks.”
Larissa slapped her thigh. “Wow, Dad! So logical! So, did you win?”
Sapphira nodded. “We won. First place. And after the makeover, your father caused an absolute sensation. The next day, he was the talk of the campus forums and was officially crowned the new campus heartthrob.”

“When other girls confessed their feelings to him, he told them all he already had a girlfriend–the one who’d been responsible for his transformation.”
Even after all these years, the memory brought a sweet warmth to Sapphira’s heart.
“He was a senior then, and I was just a freshman, so we hadn’t been dating long when he graduated. He was a computer science major and went abroad to study the latest internet technologies. When he came back, he founded Sprout Tech right here in Regal City. I finished my degree, studied abroad for another two years, and then, with my family’s support, opened my own fashion design studio.”
