Scarlett had expected Damian to storm out in anger, but he didn’t. Instead, after a silence of more than ten seconds, the corner of his mouth lifted into a smile again. “Since he’s playing around so freely, you should too. Sleep with me–let’s annoy him together.”

Hearing this, Scarlett instantly flared up. “You… you’re impossible!”

But Damian’s smile only widened. “We’ve slept together before.”

“That was different!” Scarlett retorted angrily.

Unfazed, Damian drawled, “How so? Did you have a different kind of sleep in mind?”

The implication in his words was clear, and Scarlett understood immediately. Knowing she couldn’t win this war of words, she pulled the hospital blanket over her head and muttered, “I’m going to nap.”

Damian simply watched as she buried herself under the covers. He knew she wasn’t really sleepy–she just didn’t want to talk to him anymore. So, he didn’t call her out on it.

Yet, lvi

ere in the quiet, Scarlett genuinely began to drift off. Damian felt a wave of

o and settled into the chair beside her bed, resting his head against the back.

ater, a sudden, insistent ringtone jarred them both awake.

fumbled for her phone, realizing it was hers. Damian was holding it at that moment; as anded it to her, her fingers brushed against his skin. The brief contact sent an unexpected ter through Damian’s chest.

Taking the phone, Scarlett saw Nolan’s name on the screen. She answered, “Nolan?”

His concerned voice came through. “A colleague mentioned you took sick leave.”

Scarlett didn’t go into detail. “I wasn’t feeling well, so I took a couple days. It’s nothing serious, please don’t worry.”

Nolan wasn’t fully reassured. “Where are you? I can come by.”

Not wanting to trouble him, Scarlett insisted, “Really, I’m much better now.”

Nolan didn’t press further. Instead, he tentatively asked, “Does that mean you’ll still attend Mr. Newman’s dinner tomorrow?”

The dinner had been scheduled earlier but postponed due to Thomas‘ busy schedule. Scarlett agreed without hesitation. “Yes, I’ll be there.”

Even though her graduate school admission wasn’t secured yet, taking this step was largely thanks to the courage Thomas had inspired in her. She was determined to go.

Hearing her confirmation, Nolan’s tone lightened. “Alright then. I’ll pick you up tomorrow afternoon.”

Scarlett nodded, though he couldn’t see it. “Okay. Thank you, Nolan.”

“It’s no trouble at all. I’m happy to,” he replied before ending the call–perhaps to avoid any potential refusal from her.

As she set the phone down, Scarlett felt the weight of Damian’s intense stare. She looked over at him. “What is it?”

Damian narrowed his eyes slightly. “You’re going to a dinner tomorrow night?”

“Yes.”

His expression darkened abruptly. “Scarlett, do you even care about your own health?”

She met his gaze and explained patiently, “A few days of rest will be enough. It’s really not a big deal.”

Damian’s frown deepened, a note of unease in his voice. “Are you… keeping the pregnancy?”

From the start, Damian had misunderstood. Seeing her in the hospital, he had assumed it was for prenatal care or a pregnancy–related issue–that worry had drawn him here.

In the past two days, he hadn’t checked her medical chart or the information card at her bedside.

Now, hearing her plan to attend a dinner so soon, a vague sense of foreboding settled over him.

Seeing how serious he looked, Scarlett felt compelled to clarify. “Damian, I’m not pregnant. Well, I was, but I lost the baby a while ago.”

A visible wave of relief washed over Damian, followed by an almost scolding tone. “Why didn’t you say so sooner?”

“You never gave me a chance to explain,” Scarlett replied softly.

Damian paused, then let out a low chuckle. “It’s for the best. I wasn’t keen on being a stepfather

anyway.”

His bluntness caught her off guard. After a moment of stunned silence, she asked, “Can I go back to sleep now?”

Mimicking her tone, Damian countered, “So, after your dinner tomorrow, will you come with me to meet my mother?”

She hadn’t expected him to circle back to that. Scarlett was momentarily speechless, then said seriously, “You clearly have someone else you’d rather take home. Why insist on it being me?”

Damian leaned forward in his chair, his eyes holding hers steadily. “You’re the only one I want to bring home. The only one.”

Scarlett looked at him, and once again, she felt herself getting lost in his gaze.
