Her voice wasn’t quiet, and Ruth heard every word.

As she passed, Ruth finally stopped and turned, her expression icy. “A petty mind sees only filth.”
Amanda didn’t back down. She sneered disdainfully. “Ruth, you’d better keep your son on a tighter leash. For him to set his sights on a Stewart’s wife–even if my son doesn’t want her anymore–that’s still Vincent’s business. What right does your son have to interfere?”
Ruth let out a sharp laugh. “Why? Because he can. That’s why.”
Amanda paled with fury, pointing a trembling finger. “You… you have no shame.”
Ruth shot her a contemptuous look. “You can barely string a sentence together and you’re still running your mouth. What, you think you’re somebody? I was ignoring you to avoid a scene, but you just keep pushing.”
Amanda grew even angrier, feeling a wave of dizziness as her blood pressure spiked.
Seeing her struggle, Ruth found it all the more amusing. “You can barely stand, yet you want to lecture me about my son? My son is upfront about what he wants. So what if he’s seeing someone? He’s with the person he likes, not yours. Look at you, getting so worked up. Don’t come crying to me if you drop dead from rage later–I want nothing to do with you.”
As she spoke, Ruth took a deliberate step back, as though avoiding contamination.
Amanda took several deep, steadying breaths. Once her composure returned somewhat, she spat at Ruth, “Your son likes sloppy seconds.”
Ruth gave a cold, dismissive snort. “Oh, so when you lose the argument, you resort to cheap insults. What’s wrong with my son boldly pursuing someone? I not only support him, I’ll back him all the way–even help him win her over.”
Seeing Ruth’s mocking expression, Amanda’s anger boiled over, and she raised her hand as if to strike.
But before she could move, Ruth’s expression darkened into a warning glare. “Go ahead, Amanda. Hit me. If you dare lay a hand on me today, we’ll see whether Rivergate belongs to the Langleys or the Stewarts tomorrow.”
Under Ruth’s fierce stare, Amanda’s raised hand slowly fell back to her side.
In this clash, Amanda had been thoroughly defeated.

Watching her tremble with suppressed rage, Ruth couldn’t resist one last jab. “Your son is so perfect, isn’t he? If you’re so capable, make him someone’s lover, too. Let’s see if he’s willing!”
Amanda stormed off, seething.

At the hospital, after Damian finished helping Scarlett with her meal, he stayed by her bedside while she received an IV drip.
Scarlett had drifted off to sleep. Just then, a message from his mother lit up Damian’s phone.
Ruth sent, “Objective achieved. I expect a reward.”
Damian said, “Well done.”
Ruth asked, “How’s my future daughter–in–law?”
Damian glanced over at Scarlett, asleep in the hospital bed, then typed back. “Recovering well.”
Ruth fired off a flurry of questions. “How’s the courtship going? Still just the “lover“? Haven’t sealed the deal yet?”
Damian chuckled softly at Ruth’s bluntness and replied, “Correct. And coercion is illegal, you know.”
Ruth said, “Sigh. Your path to winning her over is a long one.”
Damian replied, “Don’t rush her. She’s skittish. I have to go slow.”
Ruth sent, “Wishing you a swift and successful… ‘conquest“.”
She’d even placed suggestive emphasis on the last word. Damian’s quiet laugh deepened.
Scarlett was a light sleeper. The soft sound of his laughter stirred her awake.
When she opened her eyes, she saw him smiling at his phone. She couldn’t help but assume the message was from Sabrina.
After finishing the exchange, Damian looked up and was surprised to find Scarlett watching him.
Thinking she was still asleep, he hadn’t expected her to be awake. “What’s wrong?” he asked, concerned. She’d been sleeping peacefully just a moment ago.
He put his phone away and studied her with a worried expression, his eyes carefully tracing over her. While most of the bruises had begun to fade, several large, darker ones remained.

Meeting his gaze, Scarlett offered a faint smile. “It’s nothing. I just need to use the restroom.”
Hearing this, Damian immediately stood and reached for the IV bag. “Alright, I’ll take you.”
Scarlett quickly shook her head. “I can just call the nurse.” She reached for the call button beside the bed.
But Damian was quicker, gently catching her wrist. “They’re all busy right now. I’ll help you.”
His tone left no room for argument. Scarlett could tell he wasn’t going to relent. Despite her intense embarrassment, her need was urgent.
Finally, she reluctantly nodded.
In the small hospital bathroom, Damian held the IV bag aloft while standing beside her. Scarlett’s face burned crimson. Squatting down with him right there was a uniquely excruciating experience.
