Time Paused Between Silent Moments by Aven Slate 17
Chapter 17
I got it. This gathering was meant to set Henry and me up.
But… I shook my head, deciding to be honest. “My husband.”
Clatter.
A glass hitting the floor.
I turned to see an unreadable light in Henry’s eyes.
With that one sentence, the party atmosphere cooled.
I seemed to have a natural talent for killing joy.
I helped Henry into a cab. He was woozy, but his gaze stayed on me.
I leaned over to fasten his seatbelt, and he suddenly pulled me into a hug.
I struggled slightly, hearing his heart hammering against his chest.
He mumbled, “Am I too late?”
The night was quiet, only distant insect chirps.
“Henry,” I asked, “want to hear my story?”
On the drive, I talked. Henry just listened quietly, not responding.
Sometimes I wondered if he’d passed out.
But whenever I paused, he’d open his eyes, waiting for me to continue.
Unconsciously, I poured out all my grievances.
By the time I dropped him off, I realized I’d used him as a sounding board.
I apologized awkwardly. Henry just patted my head.
“Luna.”
The moonlight edged him in silver.
He spoke slowly: “True love isn’t wrong. What’s wrong is betraying that love.”
“I’ll wait. Until the day you’re ready to accept this love.”
