Another daughter and son were part of the family. The daughter, Camryn, whom she had with her late husband, lived in obscurity within the Newman family. It was said that Camryn was treated worse than a servant.
At just sixteen, she became blind due to an illness, which only added to her struggles. Even her biological mother treated her as if she were invisible, leaving her to fend for herself. Camryn was rarely brought out to social events.
Though everyone was aware of the second daughter in the Newman family, few knew of Camryn’s existence. It was rumored that she had opened a flower shop to support herself despite her blindness. While she earned a modest income each month, her half-sister frequently created problems for her.
There is a saying that when a child follows their father after a divorce, the father tends to neglect the child once he has more children with his new wife. In Camryn’s case, it was the opposite. Her uncle and stepfather never treated her well, and her mother increasingly mistreated her to please her new husband.
Serenity, unaware of Mrs. Newman’s biases against her, accompanied her aunt to meet various women. Compared to the younger ladies, the mothers were friendlier towards her.
Although many looked down on her, no one dared to say anything in her presence, likely due to Audrey’s influence. Most would simply ignore her instead.
After spending half an hour in the house, Elisa grew tired of the social scene and took Serenity outside to stroll around the yard, the most crowded area of the estate.
Elisa was known for her arrogance and condescension, which made others hesitant to approach her when she emerged from the house. She led Serenity to a quiet spot on the edge of the lawn where they could sit on two chairs, away from the crowd, yet still able to observe.
in everyone’s movements.
“How do you feel, Seren?”
Elisa swirled the glass of wine in her hand and asked Serenity, tilting her head slightly.
Serenity leaned back in her chair lazily and replied with a light smile, “It’s fine. I’ve exchanged a few words with those who are friendly to me, and I’ve chosen to ignore those who disdain and look down on me.
“Although I haven’t been part of this social circle for long, it’s not my first experience with it. I know many of the ladies here, but they don’t know me. I’ve observed their behavior in the past, so I have a clear understanding of what kind of people they are.”
