Their smartphone was quickly snatched away by the person next to them. “Are you trying to get yourself killed? How dare you take a picture of Mr. York?”
The individual was slightly perplexed. “I’m not capturing their faces—just their backs. Mr. York’s love life has finally made some progress, and this is huge news! I can’t help but want to share it on social media.”
“You can’t even take photos of their backs. Until Mr. York publicly announces his relationship, we can’t take any pictures of him or disclose anything to outsiders.”
After a moment of reflection, the person’s face turned pale. They quickly shoved their smartphone back into their pocket and thanked the individual who had stopped them from snapping the photo.
Everyone understood Mr. York’s influence. Offending him could derail their careers. It was naïve to think Mr. York wouldn’t find out if they took pictures secretly. Mr. Bucham, who was always by Mr. York’s side, was renowned for his intelligence and capabilities. The only things Mr. York remained unaware of were those he chose not to know.
Oblivious to the events unfolding around her, Serenity was taken aback by the atmosphere in the York Corporation office building as Zachary led her inside.
When Zachary brought her into his office, she noticed the plaque on the door read “Chief Operating Officer,” finally revealing his position within the company.
Once the door closed, she turned to Zachary and said, “You mentioned you have a regular job here and rarely get to meet the boss, but I just saw ‘Chief Operating Officer’ on the door. You’re being a bit too modest.”
“This isn’t my office,” Zachary lied without hesitation. His face remained calm and his breath steady.
He walked over to the sofa in the reception area and took a seat. When Serenity joined him, he explained, “This is my superior’s office. The large area filled with cubicles we passed earlier is where I work. Didn’t you come to bring me lunch? I was concerned you might feel uncomfortable under everyone’s gaze, so I asked my superior if I could borrow his office for a while.”
His statement contained both truth and deception. While it was accurate that this was not his office, the claim about Callum York being his superior was false.
Serenity believed him and sat down across from him, smiling as she replied, “Why would I feel uneasy? They can look if they want; I’m still quite confident in my appearance. Everyone addresses you as Mr. York with the utmost respect.”
