Chapter 68
Genevieve’s phone vibrated with a new email from Kay.
She put on Bluetooth earphones and opened the email.

A recording of his voice began to play. “Zero, the man you asked me to investigate, Greg Sanders, has a far more complicated background than you thought.
“On the surface, he’s the second son of a famous landscape painter, Bennett Sanders. He’s known as a virtuous man. But his mother comes from a family called the Weaver family.
“The Weaver family practiced traditional medicine in Northridge, but they were unremarkable. They went missing more than ten years ago.
“I investigated further and found that the Weaver family was a branch of the Yates family 50 years ago. However, they were kicked out after some irreconcilable differences and became an independent family after that.
“Most importantly, Greg used to work for a top pharmaceutical company in Sieraland under a pseudonym. He was a consultant for them and the Yates family was one of their investors.”
As she had expected, Greg wasn’t an outsider in this matter at all. From the beginning until now, he had always been
involved.
Everything that Greg said was a carefully designed trap. He wanted her to stop–not to protect her, but rather to prevent her from investigating things further. He was afraid that she would discover their ulterior motives.
Kay’s voice continued to play in her earphones. “Apart from that, I’ve compared the emerald bracelet with the seal from the Yates family. It’s not just a simple token.
“It’s known as the Seeker’s Twinstone. According to the tales, it’s the only key to the Yates family’s treasure trove. Apparently, the treasure trove holds a medicine that puts both modern and traditional medicine to shame. It can make numerous people go insane.
“The Yates family has been after the bracelet for almost 100 years. They have a mausoleum at Southgate that an old man named Heron Yates oversees. He’s the eldest in the family. The address is at the end of this email.”
Genevieve slammed on the brakes, making the tires screech.
A treasure trove? A secret medicine?
So that was what they were after!
The emerald bracelet wasn’t just a token Zoe had taken with her–it was a precious item that could cause bloodshed in the
world.
Genevieve drew in a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. Then, she typed a new location into the GPS, changing her
destination to the Yates family’s mausoleum in Southgate.
The streets of Southgate were paved with stone that had been smoothed from years of use. There was none of the hustle and bustle of the city center there, and time seemed to slow down.
Genevieve parked her car on the street and walked into a dark alleyway.
There was a peculiar, heavy scent of medicinal herbs in the air. At the end of the alley was a plain house with a door painted black. A worn–down plaque with the words “the Yates Mausoleum” hung on the door.
This was the Yates family’s mausoleum that Kay had mentioned.

Genevieve stood at the entrance, feeling a complex mix of emotions. This was her mother’s family and her flesh and blood. However, she felt absolutely alienated from it.
She raised her hand to knock on the door. The hollow sound of her knocks reverberated through the alley.
After a while, someone coughed and shouted hoarsely, “Who’s there?”
A squeak sounded as the door opened a sliver, and a wrinkled face poked out of the gap.
The old man warily sized Genevieve up before asking, “Who are you looking for?”
Genevieve replied calmly, “I’m here for Mr. Heron Yates.”
The old man frowned. “I’m Heron Yates. You don’t look like you’re here to see a doctor. What do you want?”
Without hesitating, Genevieve took out the fixed emerald bracelet. Placing it on her palm, she presented it to Heron.
