Chapter 67
Genevieve said, “My mother-”

Greg interjected, “Ms. Yates was my brother’s mentor. Back when he went missing, Ms. Yates was the one who found him and took him in. She taught him how to draw and how to be a good person. She was like a mother to him.”
Zoe had never told anyone about this.
Genevieve managed to croak out, “What about that emerald bracelet?”
“It’s a symbol of Ms. Yates‘ identity as a member of the Yates family.”
Greg stared at Genevieve, but it was as if he were seeing someone else through her.
“Ms. Yates suffered severe injuries when she left the Yates family. She was being pursued, and Mr. Lambert Senior happened to save her. However, the traitor from the Yates family never gave up on looking for her.
“Ms. Yates knew that she didn’t have much time left, so she split the emerald bracelet into two halves. She gave one half to you and hid it in your clothes. The other half was given to my brother.”
He bitterly chuckled. “She made him swear that unless you were in mortal danger or looking for your family, he would never give his half of the emerald bracelet to you. He could never tell you his true identity either.
“She hoped that you’d be able to live a normal, peaceful life full of joy instead of being implicated in the Yates family’s gross
vendetta.”
Genevieve’s head started to hurt.
“After Ms. Yates died in an accident back then, my brother met the same fate. So I knew that something was amiss. It was already too late when my family arrived at the scene.
“As I grew up and started to investigate this matter, I realized that those traitors had started to target you. I was afraid that they would find your half of the emerald bracelet and follow the clues to uncover the true secret of the Yates family. So, I had no choice but to take the emerald bracelet first.
“I was planning to wait until the danger had passed before returning it to you. I never expected that it would end up in Mr. Lambert Senior’s hands.”
It was all too much information for Genevieve to take in at once. It basically overturned everything she had believed to be true. She couldn’t figure out how much of it was true and how much of it was a lie.
She was quiet for a few moments before she finally looked up. “I have one final question. Who killed my mother?”
Greg’s expression turned grave. He looked at her with fear in his eyes.
He was silent for a while before slowly saying, “The ones who killed Ms. Yates are the same people who poisoned Mr. Lambert Senior. The person they’re working for is someone whose power is beyond our imagination.”
He looked at her, his gaze filled with genuine concern. “Genevieve, you need to stop. You can’t beat them. Ms. Yates‘ biggest wish was for you to survive and have a good life. But now, you’re a target in their eyes.”
Instead of answering him, Genevieve merely said, “Thank you for telling me all this.”
She stood and left. Greg didn’t try to stop her.
It was only after she left that a man suddenly pushed the door open and entered the room. He looked at Greg with mockery in his gaze and said, “Mr. Sanders, not only are you a skilled artist, but you’re quite the storyteller too.”
Greg took a sip from Genevieve’s cup of tea, staying silent.
Chapter 67
2/2
After Genevieve got into the car, she put the two halves of the emerald bracelet together. It seemed the part about the bracelet was true, but Greg was lying about something else.
A glint flashed in her eyes. She took her phone out and texted Kay.
“Investigate Greg Sanders‘ true identity and the origins of his family.”
Then, she continued to drive, her face devoid of any expression.
Greg’s story had been seamless. It was the quintessential tale of a sentimental man who wanted to silently protect the daughter of an old acquaintance to repay a favor.
However, in this world, the most perfect lies were mostly made of the truth, with just a bit of deceit sprinkled in.
The emerald bracelet was real. Perhaps the photograph of her mother and Greg’s brother was genuine as well. However, Greg’s motives were not as harmless as he made them seem.
He had tampered with Raymond’s medical records without any hesitation and left no trace behind. How could he just be a simple artist?
On top of that, he had managed to accurately locate the emerald bracelet. He had even known of its existence before she did, despite the fact that she was Zoe’s own daughter.
So how could he possibly be an outsider in all this?
