Chapter 46

Genevieve’s gaze landed on the bouquet before looking away. She could end it all the next day. She wanted to put that ridiculous marriage to rest once and for all.

However, the moment she picked up her car keys, her phone began to ring.

She frowned and tapped on the answer button.

A panicked voice rang out, “Mrs. Lambert, please come back! Something’s wrong! Mr. Lambert Senior is suffering from sudden heart palpitations. He’s in critical condition!”

Genevieve’s hand tightened around her phone.

Raymond was suffering more attacks than he used to.

She couldn’t help but feel like Raymond still didn’t want her to get a divorce from Zachary, despite having agreed to it verbally.

Was he trying to threaten her with his health?

His butler, Wilson, continued, “The doctor said Mr. Lambert Senior kept calling out your name. Please, Mrs. Lambert. Come and see him one last time.”

She sighed. Even though she already knew that he could be pretending, she couldn’t just stand by and ignore him.

She said, “I’ll be right there.”

The atmosphere in the Sloane residence was almost suffocating.

With a sharp crack, a mug broke into pieces after being tossed onto the ground.

Regina’s hair was a mess, and her makeup was running down her face. She was no longer decked out in glitz and glam. She knelt on the floor and tugged desperately at her father, Justin Sloane’s pant leg.

“Dad! I won’t! I’m not going to marry that James guy! He’s a pervert! I’d rather die than marry him!”

Justin kicked her away, his expression steely. He didn’t have an ounce of sympathy for her in his glare.

“You have no right to refuse, as you’ve embarrassed our family! Our stocks are dropping

rapidly. All of our partnerships are being cancelled. We’re done for!”

He pointed a finger in Regina’s face. “The Landers family is the only one that’s willing to help us right now! Their only condition is that you marry James. Either you marry him, or I disown you and kick you out. It’s your choice!”

Regina collapsed on the ground and stared at her father in disbelief. She had stolen, cheated, and framed others for the family glory that Justin was always talking about.

However, now that they were in trouble, he was pushing her off the other end by wringing her out to dry.

How ironic.

She was trembling as she stood and rushed back to her room in a frenzy. She locked the door and called Zachary, her hand shaking.

He was her last hope. The call went through.

“Zach…” She sobbed desperately as she spoke. “Zach, save me! My dad wants to marry me off to James. He’s trying to kill me! Come take me away and marry me! If you marry me, our problems will all be settled! Zach!”

All she heard was a long bout of silence.

Zachary sat in his office, staring at crashing line graphs and a pile of cancellation contracts waiting for his signature.

He listened to Regina’s desperate cries over the phone, and his eyes softened for a moment.

He really did love her.

However, the Lambert family simply couldn’t suffer any more losses.

He pinched his brow tiredly. “Regina, calm down. Don’t argue with your father. Things… aren’t as simple as you think. Give me some time. I’ll think of a solution.”

He was just trying to brush things over.

Regina couldn’t believe it. Her cries stopped abruptly.

On the other end of the line, Zachary continued speaking gently as if he hadn’t sensed anything. “Rest up first. Don’t think too much, okay?”

After he spoke, he hung up quickly, and the last bit of life in Regina’s face completely drained

away.
