Chapter 34

The next morning, Genevieve went straight back to the studio.

Just then, her phone rang. The caller ID showed an unfamiliar landline number.

Genevieve arched a brow and answered it.

On the other end of the line, the Lamberts’ butler, Wilson Frayne, spoke in a hesitant, strained voice. “Mrs. Lambert, there’s a charity gala tonight hosted under the family’s name. It’s at Swanston Hotel. Mr. Lambert Senior would like you to be there.”

“Under the family’s name?” Genevieve frowned.

She didn’t need to think twice to know whose idea this was.

Wilson let out a quiet sigh. “Mrs. Lambert, Mr. Lambert Senior takes this gala very seriously. He said it’s been a tradition for years and is important to Lambert Group’s public image. He also said that, as Mr. Lambert’s wife, you should be there.”

“I understand,” Genevieve said, not taking it out on the butler. Her voice gave nothing away. “I’ll attend.”

When she hung up, she tossed her phone onto the couch.

Hannah came over with a cup of warm water, worry written all over her face. “Gen, this is obviously a trap. Zachary was put in his place yesterday, and now, he’s pulling this stunt? He’s definitely up to something!”

“He’s always up to something.” Genevieve took the cup and sipped.

Hannah’s cheeks flushed with anger. “Then, why are you going? You’re just letting him get what he wants.”

“Why wouldn’t I go?” Genevieve set the cup down. “If he wants to set the stage, he still needs the main character to show up. I’m curious what new stunt he thinks he can pull.”

When Hannah saw how composed Genevieve looked, the tight knot in her chest loosened.

This was the Genevieve she knew. She could step into the spotlight and command the entire room.

Hannah believed in Genevieve.

As the city’s most exclusive five-star hotel, Swanston Hotel sparkled in the night, gathering the rich and powerful in one

place.

The moment Genevieve appeared at the ballroom entrance, nearly every gaze snapped toward her.

Instead of a showy gown, she wore a silver-gray dress with bold, modern tailoring. It draped over her curves, and the slit rose just high enough to reveal her long, pale legs.

Her hair was styled in a loose but graceful updo, paired with simple diamond studs. She carried an untouchable, almost otherworldly air, her presence impossible to ignore.

Whispers rippled through the crowd. No one expected for the Genevieve they used to look down on to make an entrance this dazzling.

Zachary noticed Genevieve immediately.

He was dressed in a sharp white suit, and his hair was neatly styled. A practiced smile played on his lips as he chatted with a group of powerful executives.

When he saw Genevieve, surprise flickered across his eyes.

For a moment, he almost didn’t recognize her.
