Chapter 15
What made Zachary think that Genevieve would ever apologize to Regina?
Still, after hearing what Zachary had said earlier, Genevieve finally understood how the studio had been robbed.
“Mr. Lambert, accusations aren’t proof,” Genevieve said, perfectly calm. “You need to present the evidence. If you can prove
that Hannah’s fragrance really was copied from Ms. Sloane’s, then Hannah and I will apologize to her.”
Zachary immediately turned to Regina. “Regina, take out your perfume. Show everyone who’s the liar here!”
Regina’s face went pale.
What was she supposed to take out now?
The sample she’d bought on the black market was long gone. She’d used every last drop trying to deconstruct the scent.
Panic flashed in her eyes. She instinctively grabbed Zachary’s sleeve, then quickly put on a calm, gracious front. “Zach, forget about it. This is Mr. Hale’s gala. I don’t want to spoil everyone’s night over my personal matters.”
Zachary saw this gesture as a show of kindness, but Genevieve found it nauseating.
Regina wanted to back out now? It was too late.
Genevieve stepped forward, unhurried. “Since Mr. Lambert insists that the scent my friend blended is exactly the same as Ms. Sloane’s earlier bottle, that also means the ingredients here are sufficient to recreate Ms. Sloane’s so-called masterpiece.”
She smiled and added, “So, why don’t we let Ms. Sloane do it again right here in front of everyone? Mr. Lambert can smell it for himself and decide whether it’s truly identical.”
The people in the room immediately seized on the idea.
“Exactly! If it’s her own work, what’s so hard about making it again?”
“Right. Let us see what she can really do!”
“That’s the fairest way. We’ll know who’s telling the truth after she makes the perfume!”
A fine sheen of sweat broke out along Regina’s back.
Zachary didn’t know the truth. He simply thought that Genevieve was deliberately making things difficult.
Seeing how pale Regina looked, he softened his tone and tried to encourage her. “Regina, don’t be afraid. Blend it again and show them. Then, they’ll apologize to you.”
But Regina couldn’t make it. She had analyzed that fragrance over and over, and she still couldn’t crack its formula. The rare materials and the ratios were far beyond her level.
She glanced at Zachary, then closed her eyes and fell straight back.
“Regina!”
The crowd jolted.
Zachary reacted quickly and caught her in his arms. His expression darkened as he held the “unconscious” woman against his
chest.
“Genevieve, are you happy now?” he roared. “Regina’s been weak since she came back from overseas. You forced her into this. If something happens, you’ll bear half the responsibility!”
Half the responsibility?
Genevieve almost laughed. Zachary really had a talent for twisting the truth.
Chapter 15
“You do have a brain. Try using it sometime,” Genevieve mocked.
Regina’s “faint” was obviously fake, but Zachary was stupid enough to believe it.
Genevieve saw it clearly. Regina’s fingers were still gripping Zachary’s suit.
Zachary didn’t waste time. He scooped Regina up and started to leave.
As he passed Genevieve, he leaned in, his voice lowered and vicious. “Genevieve, you just wait! We’ll settle this at home!”
“Sure.” Genevieve met his glare, her smile bright and polite. “And don’t forget to sign the divorce papers later.”
Zachary stopped short. He turned back, staring at her like he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard.
