The elderly man let out a heavy sigh, rubbing his face as he muttered, \u201cIf I had known you possessed such talent, I wouldn\u2019t have rushed over! Now I\u2019m not only exhausted, but I\u2019ve also been slapped multiple times! What bad luck!\u201d<\/p>\n

He then asked, \u201cIs my face still red?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust a little,\u201d Charlie replied.<\/p>\n

The old man grumbled again, \u201cIf your mother asks, tell her I ran into a pole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once they got home, Charlie quickly headed to the supermarket to pick up groceries and prepare dinner for the family.<\/p>\n

He called his wife, Claire, to check if she had any dinner cravings. However, she mentioned that she needed to work on a project with Doris Young that night, and as a result, Doris had invited her to dinner at Emgrand Group.<\/p>\n

Upon hearing this, Doris added, \u201cSir, the project is in progress, so your wife might be quite busy for a while. I hope that doesn\u2019t trouble you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being understanding, Charlie responded, \u201cI hope the company serves her good food and treats her well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doris quickly assured him, \u201cDon\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll make sure she has the best dinner the company has to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds good,\u201d Charlie texted back. With Claire out for dinner, he didn\u2019t feel the need to plan an elaborate menu, so he casually picked some ingredients and whipped up a simple meal for his in-laws.<\/p>\n

After dinner, the elderly couple went out for square dancing, while Charlie stayed home and immersed himself in a captivating book.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, his phone rang\u2014it was Douglas Adams.<\/p>\n

Charlie hesitated to answer. Douglas could be quite stubborn. After a previous attempt to offer him advice, he had responded by yelling, which had been incredibly frustrating.<\/p>\n

However, realizing Douglas was likely in a tough spot, Charlie decided to pick up the call. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

On the other end, Douglas was sobbing. \u201cCharlie, my dear brother! I\u2019m so sorry\u2014I\u2019ve wronged you!\u201d<\/p>\n

Hearing his distress, Charlie\u2019s demeanor softened. \u201cDid you discover the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n

Douglas cried, \u201cAfter our fight, I felt increasingly uneasy. I tracked her iPhone and ended up at a villa in the suburbs. When I knocked to confront the cheater, the man\u2019s chauffeur and butlers beat me up, and I ended up in the hospital\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Douglas broke down again, \u201cCharlie, I was so blind! Please don\u2019t be mad at me. You\u2019re my best friend, my only friend! If you cut ties with me too, I\u2019ll have no one left in Aurous\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie sighed and replied, \u201cI don\u2019t hold it against you. Which hospital are you at?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m at Silverwing Hospital,\u201d Douglas sobbed. \u201cHe broke my legs with a baseball bat. The doctor said I won\u2019t be able to walk for a few days. Can you help me sell the drawing you gave me? I took it with me to catch that cheater. I spent all my money at the restaurant, and now I\u2019m completely broke, so I can\u2019t pay for the hospital bills\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie\u2019s heart sank. \u201cThey didn\u2019t cover your medical expenses?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo\u2026\u201d Douglas replied, his voice trailing off.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you call the police?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did, but they said I broke into their house, and the others were just protecting themselves\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow dare they!\u201d Charlie was furious. \u201cWait for me; I\u2019ll be there in just a few minutes!\u201d<\/p>\n
